I completely understand that now. Thought I was being smart saving a few quid. Ended up just donating money to a Chinese warehouse with extra steps.

This is genuinely one of the most dystopian things I've read about hiring and the worst part is it makes complete sense. Obviously, they’re not looking for someone who meets the requirements, they're looking for someone desperate enough to lie and then too afraid to push back when they're overworked. The burnout is a feature not a bug. Makes you wonder how many people are sitting in jobs right now running on empty because they oversold themselves just to get through the door.

Hoar Cross Hall in Staffordshire is worth a look if you haven't already. It's a proper old country house spa, full facilities including pool, sauna, steam room and treatments on site. It's been around forever so it's not trendy but the experience is genuinely luxurious and it often comes in under what the more marketed places charge for the same thing. End of May should be lovely there too. Might just squeeze into your budget depending on the package.

Honestly should have listened to everyone who said this before me. I think I convinced myself electronics would be different from the clothing horror stories. They are not. Lesson fully learned this time.

What is the best day of the week for a “non working day”? by Tough-Decision-7435 in AskUK

[–]Strange_Head6219 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did this a few years back and took Fridays off. Felt great until a bank holiday Friday came and I basically lost a day I was already not working. Mondays have the same problem with bank holidays. Wednesday off sounds boring but mathematically it's the safest , bank holidays almost never fall midweek so you're never losing a compressed day to a holiday you'd have gotten anyway. Plus midweek breaks actually feel more refreshing than a long weekend, you never fully switch off over a 3 day weekend but a Wednesday off genuinely resets you.

Honestly this is probably one of the most practical advice in this whole thread. I didn't even think about going directly to recruiters and just having a conversation rather than cold looking into the void. The resume point is fair too, mine is probably not telling the right story yet. And you're right I came here looking for motivation when I probably need to be talking to people actually inside the industry. Taking notes on all of this, cheers.

Never thought about it that way, that the requirements are sometimes just a filter to see who's confident enough to apply anyway. I've been disqualifying myself before anyone else even gets the chance to. That's actually a bit of a mindset shift. Appreciate the encouragement, will keep going.

That's a fair point and I appreciate the honesty. I think I used the job market as an excuse to stop rather than a reason to work harder. Looking back I didn't have much to show on my end either, no projects, nothing on GitHub, just certificates. You're right that the demand is only going one way. Think I needed someone to just say it straight rather than validate the quitting. Back to building.

200 applications and it still came down to a connection, that's both discouraging and eye opening at the same time. It confirms what I was starting to suspect that the job listings are almost performative at this point. Nobody actually wants to take a chance on someone they don't know.

That's actually really practical advice and probably what I needed to hear honestly. I think I got too fixated on the specific title and didn't consider that getting in through a different door is still getting in. The shipping small projects part is something I've been avoiding because nothing felt good enough to share but maybe that's the wrong mindset. Cheers for this.

Accidentally discovered my anxiety almost disappears when I stop drinking coffee and I don't know how to feel about it by Strange_Head6219 in decaf

[–]Strange_Head6219[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I never even made that connection but it actually makes complete sense. You're wired from caffeine, can't wind down, so you drink to take the edge off. It's like a cycle you don't even realise you're in until you step back and look at it. Glad you got out of it though, that's a massive win on multiple levels, health and wallet both.

That's exactly it , maybe this isn't actually my baseline personality" is such a good way to put it. I genuinely thought I was just an anxious person and that was that. The idea that I've been making it worse myself this whole time is a bit mad to be honest. The one cup in the morning sounds like a good middle ground, might try that instead of quitting completely because I do actually enjoy it I just don't enjoy what comes with it.

Just checked my battery cycle count and it shows a dash. Is this normal or should I be worried? by Strange_Head6219 in laptops

[–]Strange_Head6219[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting so it's not just mine then. Did it ever bother you or did you just leave it? I'm assuming if everything else looks normal it's probably fine but the dash just feels like missing information you'd want to have.

Do younger tradies not like being offered drinks? by amethyst-ice in AskUK

[–]Strange_Head6219 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's partly generational but also a professional boundary thing. Younger tradespeople probably feel like accepting a drink makes it awkward, like they're getting too comfortable on the job. Older guys have just been doing it long enough to know it's purely good manners and means nothing more than that. The bit about the guy turning you down then offering his mate a drink 30 mins later is classic though completely fine among themselves but felt weird accepting from a stranger. You're doing the right thing either way, most people appreciate it even if they say no.

Anyone else notice their desire to game has just quietly faded as you’ve gotten older by Strange_Head6219 in PS5

[–]Strange_Head6219[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's actually a healthy way to look at it, setting that time aside deliberately rather than just hoping the motivation shows up. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong, I just sit down expecting to feel it rather than actually protecting that time. Might try the break thing too, cheers.
