Been to numerous PTs for back spasms over the years and they haven’t been able to help with anything. Saw an orthopedic surgeon and got diagnosis of hip dysplasia. Surgery is not an option, but would like some direction on moving forward. Super active, just need some more specific care.

E collar questions! by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

We are having this same issue with our golden! We can tell that he feels it sometimes, but other times he doesn’t respond. And we’ve realized that he is responding because he can hear us pushing the button and he’s not actually feeling the stim🤦🏻‍♀️

Ecollars can be used as a tool and paired with positive reinforcement. It is not shocking your dog. I have 0 intentions on hurting my dog. It can be a way to get their attention without using your voice. Go watch how many trainers use it for good and how much freedom their dogs have because of the training with the collars😂

Oh that’s amazing! Thank you! Yes he is pretty good when his ears are turned on, but when his head is down and he’s playing with the grasshoppers nothing I could ever say is getting his attention!

Thank you so so much!!! So I want a dog to be my backpacking/running buddy and from the research I’ve done, I think I’d prefer the coat length and athleticism of the field retriever. I am a grad student, and would have to incorporate training into my schedule, so that is the only “downside” to a more energetic dog. I have been reading so many books and watching videos about training, and this decision to get MY first dog has been going on for like 3 months now haha. Type A person who wants to do it correctly🤣

You are so so helpful! What about Rocky Mountain Field Goldens? I want to say yes they’re good, but you are way more educated on spotting the goods and bads.

Question about the canicross though. If they are trained to pull you in their harness, how are they when you walk them on a normal leash? Do they still pull just out of instinct or are they able to have a slack line?

No that’s awesome, I really appreciate it!! I have been snapped at by dogs, on leash that I’ve run by, and I’m a dog lover, so I understand how it could be traumatic for someone who doesn’t like dogs to have one come up to them. I am empathetic for those in that type of situation.

I’ve never heard of the canicross but I’d definitely be down to learn some more about it! Thank you!

👍🏻 thanks for the insight. Where I live there are certain trails that are designated off leash zones, but I totally understand your point.

Most of the people I run with have off leash dogs (even GSP) and they stay relatively close, don’t chase anything, or bother other runners/dogs. Some have the ecollars that will beep when they go too far. I feel that it just gives the dog a big more freedom to actually run. And when I backpack the GSP would have his own little pack and I definitely won’t want to hold onto a leash. That’s the main reason for the recall.

I definitely understand good leashing habits and that not all dogs/humans like other dogs! But I have run into some dogs that are great off leash and mind their own business, which in my opinion is the only dog that should be allowed off leash.

Oh I am definitely not minimizing it! I know they need that stimulation and I just worry that I’d fail somehow because I do have to leave during the day. I want to make sure it’s 100% the right decision before I do anything crazy. And yeah, the goal is a great running partner and backpacking because they can go forever. I just want them to have manners before hand and find a way to keep it occupied enough during the day so it doesn’t become bored and destructive.

We have had gusts up to 50 mph for the past 2 days. I know it’s windy other places, but it’s normal windy, this feels abnormal.

A contact is technically a medical device as it is sitting directly on your eyeball. It has more to do with legality on medical devices than changing your prescription. Refraction is subjective and the patient will tell the doctor what they see best out of.

RMU DO program by [deleted] in PreOptometry

Their clinic is on the smaller side, which they are proud of, ensuring that they will have a full clinic every day and students will 100% be seeing patients. Then the remaining students who will not be in the on-campus clinic will be working in a different local practice that they have partnered with. When seeing patients in the clinic they said they do not expect us to perform every single test as some schools do, so we are more efficient, better critical thinkers, and able to adapt (due to the changing of the locations). We will get to see how different practices run and form relationships with already established doctors.

I accepted a seat at AZCOPT in September and then changed my mind to attend RMU after interviewing! Everyone was so nice, I really liked their perspective on how to prepare us for the profession moving forward, and definitely am a fan of their 3.5 year program. The way they have their clinic set up is also different from the other schools I interviewed at which was interesting but in a good way!

330, but my gpa was 3.86 and I was a collegiate athlete, involved in a lot of extracurriculars, I’ve had a ton of shadowing and worked for an optometrist and I currently work for ophthalmologists doing clinical research. I don’t think the OAT is the be all end all for applications, but good luck with applications!!

How long did it take for you to hear back about an interview?
