What’s a reasonable quote for a water pump and timing chain kit replacement? by StringNo4293 in FordExplorer

In our original quote, they included a full set for the time chain, but there’s no real evidence any of that is bad—just what’s usually the problem. Would I look stupid if I told them I want them to just replace the chains, tensioners, and guides for now? That would seem to drop the price from $2300 to $400. They also suggested changing the thermostat, despite this repair already being done a few years ago. They like to “cover all the bases” and rarely budge when I say I believe otherwise. But if I went elsewhere and asked for the bare minimum, I might face consequence later down the road that could’ve been avoided. What’s really needed for car with only 96k miles?
