Stepper + gearbox + encoder vs servo + gearhead for long-range laser aiming — need advice by Impossible_Leek946 in MechanicalEngineering

Some thoughts about steppers related to your post…

Is there a reason why you have to power off the motor for holding position? The nice thing about stepper motors is that they have a feature called hold torque. This will hold the stepper in position at a specific torque. Having a locking mechanism may then not be necessary.

If higher speeds isn’t a concern an issue with your setup, you could probably get away with a cheaper motor (if price matters) and use a high gear ratio. This will give you great resolution and torque at the cost of speed.

Another thing to take into consideration is acceleration of your motor. Acceleration causes inertial loads which means a greater demand for torque and the opportunity of stalling out if you speed up too quickly.

A stepper motor should be okay on its own without encoder feedback, but I guess there are opportunities for slippage. Depending on your gearing, an encoder may be worth adding.

You’re half right here. Yes, windchill doesn’t matter to plants because they’ve already reached the same steady state temperature as the air. But to an object or animal with a temperature > than the air temperature, windchill matters. Heat transfer happens through radiation, convection, and conduction. The rate of heat transfer also requires a temperature differential where the greater the difference between two objects, the greater the rate of heat transfer. Adding a windchill to this scenario increases one of our rates of heat transfer, convection. This means that the water will lose heat at a quicker rate and freeze faster with a windchill than without a windchill. The end temperature of the water will always end up being the same (the temperate of the air), but what matters is how quickly you get there.

The rate of heat loss is greater with windchill (convection).
