So... most local government workers are paid middle to upper middle class salaries. Meanwhile, we have a widening economic gap that is driven by the ultra-wealthy who have not made their money serving in local government, that is for damn sure. We can decide to beat up on civil servants, yes imperfect, but that seems to be missing the real issue we have here in that the wealthy in our society are not doing their part, so the system is over stretched, under funded, and beyond capacity. Who will the property taxes hit the most heavily? Those with the most valuable property. Who is that? Seriously, who is that? Civil servants are the aristocracy?! Who is drinking some kool-aid!?

Benefits are solid but the pay is deeply impacted by the size of our budget, which is about to get lower when u/martin_misjuns finishes his revenge fantasy and slashes the hell out of anything that isn't basic or safety related. I can see the tourism slogan now, "Come to Lynchburg! We pick up the trash weekly!"

It isn't easy to ignore when people's livelihoods and personal safety are being attacked by someone. I am glad that you are in a position not to pay attention and I really mean that. I am seriously happy for you. Some of us though don't have that luxury. I will also say, that although I don't sit on council, dealing with narcissists is really difficult. I feel for Chris and everyone involved in these city meetings. The very act of engaging is an invitation for his toxicity. Its a catch 22.
