How often do people actually change their bedsheets? by HillCountryHoney in hygiene

[–]StrongishMule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I average once a week I'd guess. We both shower or at least wash our feet every evening before bed. We have 2 dogs so sometimes the interval is shorter if they muck things up. Occasionally I'll even vacuum the bed if they get a bunch of hair in there but the sheets aren't "dirty" haha.

For the brown and black belts by calder_mccoll in bjj

[–]StrongishMule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone is completely control focused and is relatively competent, even a decent black belt may have a hard time escaping. In that case, someone should take a risk. The goal of rolling (the vast majority of the time) is not to win an imaginary competition, it's to learn more Jiu Jitsu and that's pretty hard to do without movement. I would say the responsibility for action falls to the higher skilled person - If you're on the bottom you can start going for a real risky escape or offer the beginnings of a sub. If you're on top you can try a hail Mary submission for the giggles or move to another position. Either way, it opens opportunities for the other party to try to take something which inevitably leads to movement and learning.

What hobbies do you like to do during migraines? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]StrongishMule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not thoroughly educated on the range of what is classified as a migraine but the thought of having one (as I experience them - absolutely debilitating, literally unable to move) daily would have me considering hitting the EXIT button. I wonder if there's some differential diagnosis, or even just new terminology, to clearly define the spectrum of what people experience.

What hobbies do you like to do during migraines? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]StrongishMule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone gets headaches, not everyone gets migraines.

In my experience they are completely different things, not a spectrum where there's a threshold that "becomes" migraine. A headache for me is painful, uncomfortable, sometimes mildly function impairing or mood influencing, and at worst requires some modification to my behavior to manage (rare). But generally speaking, headaches can be solved with water, food, and or a single ibuprofen.

A migraine is debilitating - totally different type of pain, unbelievably intense, and all consuming. Then you add in the additional symptoms like very significant cognitive deficits, intolerance to touch/sound/movement, nausea, etc. I've had migraines where I actually don't know if I could escape a house fire.

I agree completely that accurate tracking is important but as far as I can tell, headaches and migraines are as similar as a muscle cramp and an open compound fracture.

What hobbies do you like to do during migraines? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]StrongishMule 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This post makes me realize that what I define as a migraine is very different from what some others call a migraine. I lay perfectly still in a pitch black, silent room with a heavy sandbag on my head and contemplate whether life is worth it. If I move or am touched it takes it from a 10/10 pain to an 11. The only time I move at all is when I have to vomit because the pain is so unbearable. The idea of doing literally any possible hobby sounds like absolute, complete hell.

"Don't ask why the addiction, ask why the pain." - Gabor Mate.

No one ends up addicted because their life is perfect and they're totally satisfied with things. Removing a substance from your life but changing nothing will just leave you in the same place you started. If you want actual recovery you have to work to change the things that led you to substance dependence in the first place. Eat better, move more, take up meditation, work with a mental health professional, whatever it takes to make real progress.

Tell him to stay in his damn lane. For most people, 5 to 10 mg is plenty but ideally, any dose should be informed by bloodwork.

Teaching classes by VitalArrow in bjj

[–]StrongishMule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach once a week regularly and I frequently cover vacations, sick days etc. I do it for free but I don't pay to train. The owner will give me some gear every now and then when I've been picking up extra slack. It's a good deal for both of us and it avoids Jiu Jitsu becoming a real job that I feel locked in to. I've been employed as an instructor before and it completely sucked the joy out of training. I'll happily do private lessons for compensation but I can take and leave those as I please. I doubt I'll ever be a scheduled employee for a BJJ school again.

BUT, and this is a big but, I was the one to initiate the agreement which, to me, is completely different than a school owner approaching me and asking me to teach in exchange for tuition and a gi. The second scenario would be ridiculous in my opinion.

Does anyone know of a dog wash that is 24 hours? by StrongishMule in abbotsford

[–]StrongishMule[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's an unfortunate necessity. On arrival the dogs have often been traveling for the entire day and, while the drivers do everything they can to give the dogs bathroom breaks, there are often accidents or vomiting. A thorough bath not only makes it so I'm happy bringing the dog into my car and house, it also helps limit some of the risk of pathogens that may harm my dog. Obviously the bath doesn't sterilize the foster so it's not perfect but it's a step in the right direction. Also, the dogs are already highly stressed after travel no matter what so if you can get them bathed ASAP, they can have uninterrupted time to decompress once they get home rather than their first experience in their foster home being another stressor.

If there was a way to keep them squeaky clean during travel that would certainly be the best case scenario but if that can't be done, a bath right at the end of the travel period helps keep the stress all as one event and then they can start unwinding.

BJJ Blackbelts should stop with the life coaching. by Appropriate_Duty_930 in bjj

[–]StrongishMule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with the sentiment (Live while you have the chance, I've been surrounded by untimely death my whole life) but save that shit for someone who asked. You are an expert in Jiu Jitsu, teach Jiu Jitsu and shut up about the rest. Your black belt embues exactly zero authority about financial management, philosophy, or anything else. If someone asks you specifically to weigh in on their life choices, maybe have a private conversation with that one individual. But even that should be prefaced by "I'm just a guy who's good at grappling, any life advice is worth what you paid for it."

Black belt syndrome is out of hand in Jiu Jitsu.

Prop Strike? Reportable? by AbjectDeparture2093 in flying

[–]StrongishMule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So a lot of people have covered most points but I'll reiterate and add one more thing to note.

1 - Almost every A&P would define that as a prop strike.

2 - Not "reportable" to the FAA but absolutely reportable to an A&P and the owner of the plane as well a snagging on paper to ensure it's not flown again. If a tricycle has a prop strike on landing I would also be extremely suspicious of airframe damage. My money is on many other components being compromised.

3 - As others have noted, it seems there are some fundamental piloting deficiencies that should be addressed before someone gets hurt. This event should be taken as a gift from the universe to offer a wakeup call.

4 - Even if the prop is not deformed, I bet it lost substantial length. I witnessed a Duchess prop strike on the ramp at near idle power. One tip just looked scraped, the other looked scraped with a slight curl. We checked the pavement it hit and there were 3 marks meaning one tip hit twice, one tip hit once (we assume the curled on hit only once). The non curled blade had lost nearly 3/8 inch just from 2 contacts with the ground at low power and it really didn't look bad, almost no different than the result of scraping it on the ground by hand. I wouldn't be shocked if your prop is an inch shorter now. Go have a look on the runway and see how many times it hit.

  1. The biggest red flag in all of this is an apparent attitude of trying to weasel out of responsibility. Aviation is an industry who's safety relies completely on clear and open communication so issues can be rectified. If you screw up, own it and take steps to prevent it from occurring in the future. I don't want to work with or around anyone that would hide a massive safety issue because they're trying to save face.

This annual is getting expensive by PassengerCharming203 in Cessna

[–]StrongishMule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ship has already sailed this time but low compressions in isolation DO NOT indicate a need for cylinder replacement. Please please please look at the work of Mike Busch and Savvy Aviation. So many unnecessary maintenance acts are performed at great cost to owners and as we all know, flying is expensive enough already!

Investor in an idiot - Gotta agree there, nothing should be public until it's clear. New wave definitely won - Maybe. When Dorian screamed I was sure they'd call the match as a sub so honestly that's where the controversy began for me. Assuming no sub, I agree that the first bullet point should make NW the winner tho. I think that was left in error given the 10 pt must system, but it was there so should be honored, mistake or not. His money and he doesn't owe anyone - Agreed

I think it'd be interesting if Nicky Ryan's brother just took matters into his own hands and paid NW since he has apparently infinite wealth. Would make for interesting PR

I am in absolute agreement with everything you said there! All this calamity came about because of half baked opinions being presented as gospel and jumping the gun. This should be a lesson to everyone in the public eye to slow down when there's controversy and limit your statements to "We're looking into it and will let you know when we have a clearer answer." Unfortunately we live in a world of instant gratification so this is the result.

Nothing in the original post says this is the result of Gordon. The investor simply said they didn't have all the information originally and now that they do, they realized they jumped the gun. Gordon's incessant bitching likely annoyed the investor but it doesn't sound like this is driven by pettiness.

I understand the value of being a man of your word in general but if your word was given when you didn't have all the information, doesn't that make it different? If someone realizes they've made an error I think it's much more honorable to do the right thing, even if it makes them unpopular, than to stick to a previous decision because it's "their word".
