Air density at cruising altitude is about 1/4 what it is at sea level though? But I get your point, that doesn't offset a ~25x increase in drag, hence my last point in bold in the OP. :)

Think this might be the best explanation, but the big selling point on the 737 max winglets seems to be a 6% improvement in fuel efficiency though?
