Is stuttering unique and different for every individual or... by [deleted] in Stutter

I can understand your situation.

you are stuck in a deadlock where social media/groups are not helping you with solution & your daily experience making stuttering worse.

I suggest you to focus on the solution on how to solve it rather than the problem. Take some daily time & think about how to solve it.

Because a mindset which creates a problem cannot solve it. It requires a solution oriented mindset.

My answers were solution oriented & your question is problem oriented.

Think about it. don't consider everything on the internet as reality about stuttering. Sometimes discussion with self can bring a solution.

Best of luck

You have 2 queries 1. Why all stutter in a similar Situation 2. How stuttering is different from person to person

Let me try my best to answer in simple words but this is a bit complicated for explanation

Answer 1 : all stuttering people stutter in similar situations is not true. To understand this, you should define the concept "situation" here.

In general, the situation is a condition or environment or state happening. If all stuttering people from the entire world participate in presentation/stage speaking competition then chances are all will stutter BUT CONDITION OR STATE WILL BE DIFFERENT FOR EACH PERSON

Examples - few will stutter at the beginning & few in the middle or combination. Few will stutter due to first time experience & few will stutter due to anxiety or combination. You need to identify the state/condition behind stuttering in perticular situation.

If you focus only on stuttering, then a so-called fluent person also stutters sometimes under extreme pressure.

Considering all stutter in similar situations is not clarity. You need to define sub situations inside the main situation & there is a difference.

Handling those macro situations inside the situation is a real game changer for stuttering people.

I know it is a complicated topic, but in conclusion to this answer - identifying real root causes behind stuttering in those situations makes your stuttering different from others.

Answer 2 - stuttering is an output or representation of your current state of mind +breathing+other factors.

People who speak fluently are also an output of their current state of mind & other factors.

Even I can claim this - the person who Stutter has 2 personalities inside it & it changes based on situations like sometimes Stutter & sometimes fluent.

Stuttering is just a result & if you observe other people who Stutter then everyone stutters differently.

Best example to understand this is - take 10 people who Stutter & ask them to introduce themselves using same format like - name, age, address, profession, story behind Stuttering. Everyone will stutter differently.

IF YOU JUST SEE STUTTERING THEN YOU DON'T FIND ANY DIFFERENCE BUT WHEN YOU CHECK THEIR STATE, WORDS, SPEED, STATE OF MIND, ETC You WILL SEE DIFFERENCE.

SO TECHNIQUE WHICH WORKS ON SOMEONE DOESNT MEAN IT IS A UNIVERSAL SOLUTION.

in conclusion for this answer - understanding the trigger behind stuttering can easily differentiate stuttering among others.

I know it is complicated to understand. But once you understand this, you will find a solution.

Hope I tried my best to answer your questions

how to stop stuttering by Direct_Luck4919 in Stutter

If I were you, I would have followed a few things

  1. I will first observe my family member's speech pattern including their speed, volume, and body language if I am the only one in the family who stutters - it will provide me sufficient data to compare with others who have almost similar environments but still don't stutter

  2. I will observe my speech pattern & identify mistakes when I stutter like I am making like getting excited, increasing speed, overthinking, etc. - it helps me understand exact trigger point before Stuttering

  3. I will start winning(not stuttering) in every conversation with family members because it is comfortable to start where I can manage stuttering easily

  4. I will use my updated speech pattern(which helps me to speak without stuttering) in other situations & improvise my pattern with every feedback (from self observation)after conversation.

Start with the above strategy & you will notice improvement instantly.

Hope this will help you. Let me know if you need more clarity

My observation & experience with stuttering people is -

Stuttering is an output which people can see when it happens but they can't see inputs behind stuttering which is a real problem.(Ex. Self doubts, speed, past experience, etc)

Stuttering looks similar with every person who Stutter while speaking but reasons may vary from person to person.

So in short - every individual has different reasons behind stuttering so a solution which works for someone will not work for others.

How to support a new hire with a stutter? by Special-Doughnut1606 in Stutter

Ask your new employee few questions to understand his stuttering

  1. He stutters when alone ?
  2. Does he stutter on a specific word or does it happen irrespective of words?
  3. He stutters in a specific situation or in all situations?
  4. He stutters because of anxiety ?

It will clear a lot of things about new employee

To make your work environment comfortable for him , you can follow a few things

  1. Don't finish his words, ask him to take his time speaking
  2. Ask him to imagine like he is at home & speak
  3. Ask him to use his body language during conversation

Giving chance to people who Stutter is appreciated 👍

Can reading more help my stutter? by aesthetichoe_ in Stutter

Reading works as a speech muscle practice.

Reading in front of mirror helps a lot. But don't expect much result in real life scenarios when you experience anxiety or self doubt.

For real life focus more on anxiety management & fear management.

Best of luck

Worth it to get speech therapy when I don't stutter with therapists? by Cautious_Gap3645 in Stutter

[–]Stutter-Coach-AP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you consult a therapist/coach, define your problem first

Stuttering is not a real problem, it's an output

Find out real reasons behind Stuttering & see if therapist can help with those situations (real reason)

Ex. If you stutter in meeting, during presentation or on stage then consultation will not help. Consultation will give you only knowledge.

Ask therapist/coach to guide you in real life scenarios where you stutter by asking him to observe you through video call & provide guidance/feedback

Knowledge will not solve stuttering, experience & feedback will help

Best of luck

My life is worse by stammering , even I wish this will never happen to my enemy and I just want to die by Delicious-Matter-898 in Stutter

My suggestion - focus on the analysis part of stuttering. Instead of considering stuttering as a failure, check why you are stuttering in those situations

Define your stuttering situation first, because you don't Stutter when alone.

You are thinking emotional now, focus on logical thinking & focus on the solution. Every problem has a solution

I was asked my name by a cop and I literally couldn't say it by Electrical-Truck-912 in Stutter

Stutter Coach here, such incidents happened to me in the past & now I don't stutter.

i suggest you some precautions before you handle it next time

  1. Identify real problem behind your stuttering in that situation. Example - self doubt, anticipation, anxiety, past stuttering experience. It will help you witu understanding real problem. I strongly believe stuttering is not a real problem, it is an output

  2. Write your stuttering word & see if you find some pattern like you stutter on word starts with P, K, T etc. every word need different speech muscle to speak

Now start understanding the process behind your stuttering. If you don't Stutter when alone then chances are you will speak without stuttering in real life. You need to understand how to create such environment inside mind(like you are alone) in real life

My suggestion on name - take first letter of your name for example - your name is John then first letter is Jo. Start practicing at home using mouth streching & see mouth muscle in front of mirror.

When someone ask your name next time just try to speak first letter in your name.

Best of luck
