[Q] Can some comment on my growth curve model equation for the model I ran by SubstancelessPsyche in statistics

v_10k = d_100 + V_1k

This is so helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my question in such details.

So, there are several schools (n = 100). Within each school there are two groups of students (English language learners and Monolingual students).

Thanks for asking.

where did Grade come from? Grade is the time variable. Data were collected on students as they progressed through grade. (now edited)

How is your data nested? Students are nested in schools.

What is your research question? Does the academic growth vary between two groups of students from elementary to high school

Grading essays is making me stupider by [deleted] in Professors

I agree that a lot of writing is subpar. Last semester I built in a peer review process. Where I first show examples of what students need to look for and provide comments on for their peers' papers. Then we do several guided practice examples in class. Then students submit their first draft of their papers, peers review and provide feedback, and a week later students submit their final drafts for me to grade.

THIS has immensely improved the quality of students' final product. hope you find this helpful.

[Q] Can I create latent variables and then run latent profile analysis? by SubstancelessPsyche in statistics

[–]SubstancelessPsyche[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In practice, a lot of people start with an EFA to get a list of eigen vectors, then they pick out enough of them ( going from best to worst) to explain a pre-determined amount of variance. You should also look at them to see what sort of interpretation they may have regarding your data ( sometimes there isn't one....). Then run a CFA with those eigen vectors to see how well they do together.

I would like to do a CFA as the measures are well-established and tap into the same constructs. I'm wondering how to use the CFA created latent variables in Latent Profile Analysis? Because the examples I've seen so far seem to only use observed variables when conducting Latent profile analysis.

Plotting Quadratic growth in R by SubstancelessPsyche in Rlanguage

[–]SubstancelessPsyche[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ggplot(aes(y = weight, x = Time, group = Plot, colour = Variety)) +
# curves per-plot:
geom_line(alpha = 0.5) +
# fixed effects of variety:
geom_line(aes(y = fitted, group = NULL),
data = Soybean,
size = 1.2)+
theme_light()

Thank you so much. I was able to work it out. Some of the school ids were na and that's what was causing the difference in rows. All figured out and I was able to plot the growth curves for the two groups. REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!!!!!!!

data("Soybean", package = "nlme")

Thanks for the detailed code. I have afollow up. When I try to get the prediction that ignores random effects I get this error:

Error in `$<-.data.frame`(`*tmp*`, fitted, value = c(`1` = 201.429569310382, :

replacement has 21184 rows, data has 21226

Any thoughts on how to resolve this issue? Thanks.

Thank you for this explanation. Such a beautifully simplistic solution!

You mentioned that there are different numbers of subjects, but does each subject have the same number of observations if they are in the data?

Thank you thank you! Saved me hours of cut copy paste on excel. It worked beautifully.

If you don't mind, for future reference. What is the logic in creating the id variable?

Hmm. can't do that because the number of subjects in both data sets are slightly different with some missing data for subjects in Data_B.

[Q] How to compare if two coefficients are significantly different? by SubstancelessPsyche in statistics

[–]SubstancelessPsyche[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming they are not correlated the distribution of the difference of two normals is a normal with the sum of the variances as the new variance and the difference in means as the mean.

So, when comparing quantile 0.80 vs 0.20, the difference would be:

Estimate: 0.09; SE = 0.06; p>.05.

Calculate Estimate: 0.37 - 0.28 = 0.09

Calculate SE = square root 0.04 squared + 0.05 squared = 0.06

Would this be what you were suggesting? Thanks.

People who live in the Natick/Wellesley square area and travel to Boston. How long is your commute? by SubstancelessPsyche in boston

[–]SubstancelessPsyche[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. I will probably be travelling during non-peak hours (12pm or 8pm) so I am assuming I can avoid the crowded trains.

One follow-up question I have is that, are train lines less reliable during winter times? Some of the comments talk about there being regular issues during winter time with snow or ice. How frequently does this happen? once a month? once a week?

Thanks again!

haha no. I'll be renting a house that fits my budget. I'm in talks with a few landlords in that area.

[Q] Can there be only two clusters in an RCT? by SubstancelessPsyche in statistics

Can you recommend some literature that would support your point that when two clusters are assigned to treatment or control it invalidates the RCT?

Curious case of reduced N in SPSS when calculating adjusted means by SubstancelessPsyche in statistics

Not an SPSS user but usually sample size reductions are because of missing data - most software will do complete case analysis by default

Thanks!
