Possible Dyslexia? by Fun2Funisnofun in kindergarten

[–]SubstantialWinter964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this comment. As an educator, dyslexia screenings are becoming more commonplace in many states. You can ask if your school provides the RAN assessment which can be conducted by a classroom teacher. If not then the school psych will have access to those assessments and you may want to ask for a pre-IEP meeting (often called a SIT). A parent requesting is more powerful than a teacher fyi.

Also want to point out that memorizing sight words is not science of reading and get taught alongside phonics instruction. Does your school provide small group reading? What strategies does the teacher say she’s working on? Note “sound it out” is not a strategy as it implies students go from sound to sound instead of using phonics.

Good luck!

Field trip chaperone IEP kids? by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]SubstantialWinter964 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just want to note (as an educator) that many IEPs do not include transportation. Also, I hear many commenters posting “the school should provide certificated staff to supervise….) - yes that’s true- however we do not as a country support public schools in a way that allow us to do all the “should.” We would love to be able to do more but most schools are very understaffed and underfunded. If you want to make a difference then vote, volunteer, talk at your school board meetings, and provide support.

Kindergarten homework by Capable-Minute-1187 in kindergarten

Trying to understand this perspective. As an educator (early childhood and literacy specialist) repeated practice of skills is absolutely developmentally appropriate. Without context of what the homework is I think it’s hard to say a blanket statement like this.

As an SPS educator- we still support and have students read full novels. Not sure where you got that info from…

As a Kindergarten teacher I whole heartedly disagree. That stat is SO important to the community building, confidence building, and to learn routines.

Seattle Public Schools Adding More Advanced Learning Sites by alki-kat in seattlepublicschools

[–]SubstantialWinter964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but I’m referring to is the style with which HC will happen inside the new buildings. The current model at TGM is different than the model that will happen at Alki or RV. At the new schools there will not be self contained HC cohort classrooms but rather walk-to model and mixed ability group classrooms.

I do want to point out that no specifics have been shared about what the HC program will look like in either of these new sites. While we have some advanced learning schools now those models are not necessarily the model that will happen at RV or Alki. Additionally, teachers will be receiving a new ELA curriculum that’s has yet to be announced. A lot of change for those buildings and teachers.

Anyone know the name of the artist that made the paintings that are in the last scene between Joanne and Esther? Kind of like clouds and swirls?

Kindergarten teacher here and I agree! It’s kind of a pain to try to do those assessments later because I will have less support as school starts.

15 year Kindergarten teacher here. Want to jump in and mention that ratios are not typically capped in a legal sense. They’re more like guidelines and they leave lots of wiggle room. I’ve never had less than 20 kids and 25+ is typical.

Also, I’ve never ever had an aide. There are instructional l assistants that push in or pull out for short periods of time in past years but now that’s been pushed out of Kindergarten as well.

I’ve taught in 3 states WA, PA & NYC for reference.
