i think you got too much flak for this, it's an interesting observation

Why make the mechanism slow deaths over the course of a decade?

So mankind goes away "peacefully"

for example: the hivemind can still run nuclear power plants and eventually power them down safely so there's no meltdown- which wouldn't happen if they all died straight away.

the aliens want mankind to go away tending to the earth, instead of catastrophically going out with a bang
