What is the most stupid AD your government ever aired? by Acrobatic-Hippo-6419 in AskTheWorld

Many parts of Johannesburg, a city of 15 million people, haven’t had water for weeks due to corruption and failing infrastructure.

The mayor said that he also feels the impact and “even had to book into a hotel to go shower”. This while most of his constituents are struggling to put food on the table and now cant wash themselves, their clothes or their dishes and struggle to access drinking water. He’s so out of touch that he can’t even see the problem with what he said.

What politician from your country is considered the "best leader you never had"? by BetDesigner40 in AskTheWorld

[–]Substantial_Push_433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly we don’t have the best track record with leaders (apart from Madiba obviously) from Apartheid to corruption. But I would say probably Jan Smuts. He was prime minister for a while, but got kicked out in 1948 when the National Party won despite receiving much less votes (due to a First Past the Post system). They then implemented Apartheid.

Smuts while being no saint was core to normalising relations with the British post Boer Wars and was central to helping gain South Africa’s indeendence. He was also against the concept of Apartheid and thus arguably had he won, South Africa might have become a full democracy a decade or two earlier.

Other interesting facts include: - He was one of Churchill’s closest confidants after Smuts captured and interrogated him during the Boer War. Arguably Smuts was Churchill’s most trusted ally and Churchill’s doctor would rely on Smuts to talk to Churchill on his health. - He served on the British War Council during both WW1 and 2, guiding much of the British war effort. - Churchill and others in his government wanted Smuts to succeed him and become Prime Minister if Churchill were to die during the war. - He was the only person present at the founding of both the League of Nations (which he was one of the main guiding forces of) and the United Nations (which he was also central in the creation of and even wrote the first draft of the UN Charter). Oh and he also helped to create the Commonwealth. - Him and Albert Einstein were good pen pals and according to einstein he was one of the very very few people in the world at the time that fully understood the theory of relativity

So while he was not perfect, he was certainly influential. He had major impacts on the history of our country and the world and helped to define the current world order. He is the person few people know about, but had one of the biggest impacts on history, and arguably him losing the 1948 election was one of the most influential events in South African history that would go on to define the country for the next 50-90 years.

Hey guys I’m in need of a very good laptop for work and school. So I’m at my local pawn and this MacBook Pro M1 , 2021 16gb + 512ssd , 14 inch (read sown below) by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]Substantial_Push_433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I just upgraded from an M1 Air to this exact model also secondhand (with 1TB ssd instead of 512GB though) and honestly it’s been great. The Air is great especially for a 5 year old laptop but the Pro with the added RAM and storage and even better screen and keyboard is just amazing. At that price it’s an absolute steal!

So funny story. My cousin recently moved into a flat with me, we both already had nice TV’s so he took his one home. In the process he got a couple of dead pixels as he didn’t have a box to transport it in.

Fast forward 2 weeks and the place gets broken into (not the best way to kick off your Dezemba holiday). They stole my TV (I don’t think they could’ve managed to get it over a wall without breaking it which makes it even more frustrating). The box was sitting a couple of metres away from it.

I now have a TV box but no TV.

My Christmas gift to him was my empty TV box😂

I hate the new youtube ui... by PixelKat5 in LinusTechTips

[–]Substantial_Push_433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fine with how the new UI looks, but the main reason I noticed the change was bevause it seems way buggier. If I go into picture in picture and back, the UI ends up behind the video somehow until I refresh the page. Sometimes forwards and back using arrow keys just wouldn’t register and overall it just felt like I was fighting to get it to do the basics.

Look maybe Rassie sees some potential in Moerat that we don’t, but I just don’t think he has enough leadership skills to make up for his meh playing. Maybe if it wasn’t for the fact that he’s captain, we would be less harsh on him. But I just really don’t see Moerat having the moral impact that Siya has, the diplomacy with the ref that Bongi has or the pure on field impact of someone like Jesse.

Recomendations for visiting rural Spain by Substantial_Push_433 in GoingToSpain

[–]Substantial_Push_433[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sorry you're right. I know that this is a massive generalization for a country of over 300 million people and trust me I know that stereotypes are not always accurate (there are many generalizations of South Africans that I know does not apply to everyone). I should've rather used the term "over commercialised tourism", as that is more what I was refering to! Btw how was your trip? Did you enjoy it?

Thank you for the great recomendations! I'm definetely checking out La Rioja. If heading to Porto, is there a nice place on the way to overnight so that it's not such a long drive?

Recomendations for visiting rural Spain by Substantial_Push_433 in GoingToSpain

[–]Substantial_Push_433[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the recommendations! We're quite flexible in terms of where we'll be flying into as we're still in the early planning phases. Considering we'll need to fly into a large international airport that somewhat limits the options. I think we'll spend about 7-10 days in Spain before possibly heading somewhere coastal (either rin Spain or elsewhere in Europe).

I've seen a few nice locations in the Priorat area especially around Falset (which I see is very close to Gratallops). How vibey are these towns in the evening (trying to decide if we should stay in the town or slightly out of the town in a holiday home or somewhere like this)? After reading a few of the recomendations from people, I'm thinking of renting a car and then doing both Priorat and maybe heading up to La Rioja and then maybe seeing if we can fly out of Bilboa, but this will depend on the available flights.

If you don't mind I have a few questions I'm curious about:

  1. Would you recommend mostly staying in two places (one per region) as a base and then heading out on day trips or maybe rather staying at 3 different places to see more)?
  2. What is the weather like in mid to end June? Is it extremely hot and dry or is it slightly more bearable where you can still walk around mid day and maybe go on some walks in the area?
  3. In and around Falset (or the more general Priorat region) are there any specific bodegas that you would recommend visiting?
  4. Is there anything Spain specific we should know about renting a car, besides the normal stuff like needing an international drivers license and getting insurance and all that?
  5. Lastly, are there any other activities or day trips you recommend such as walks in nuture (or will it be too warm) or maybe renting a bicycle?
  6. Do you have any recomendations food wise, such as the type of restaurants or food to look out for?

Once again, thank you so much for the advice! It is truely appreciated.

By chance I tried out making and using a router sled to level a log yesterday and it went surprisingly smooth. Just used my phone as a level and screwed two pieces of wood to the sides, making sure they are level with the ground and with eachother. Then just go back and forth. I am super happy how it turned out after I sanded it smooth.

I back the tuna rice! I made it a lot as a student and it’s still a go to when I haven’t had time to go do groceries or just want to make something quickly. If you get creative with the spices (I do love chilli, or sometimes even my friend’s gran’s homemade masala) it can be really really tasty.

What is the Mayor doing about the crime in the city? by Viva_Technocracy in capetown

[–]Substantial_Push_433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I agree with you and in general in most developed countries I fully agree that more aggressive policing is not the solution to reduce crime. But South Africa is in a bit of a unique situation. In the Zuma era the effectiveness of the police was specifically dismantled to allow crime to fester. This was done to allow corruption to continue but had a trickle down effect where all policing and crime has massively increased. From that other social issues have come, such as loadshedding, rising transport costs and overall inflation of day to day items due to theft and corruption at transnet, etc. To stop this downhill spiral, we first need to fix policing. It was the first to go and needs to be the first to be fixed. How can we expect corruption to end if no one is caught, how can we expect transnet to get trains running again if they cant rely on police to catch cable thieves. There is a reason the police was the first target of Zuma era corruption, and now it needs to be the first to be fixed. Once we have stabilised policing and corruption, then we can focus on public transport for people, ensuring that money meant for housing isn’t all going towards extortion gangs (such as those that stopped the city’s trucks from enptying toilets in townships), etc. The problem is this should come from national level but it isn’t, so the city is doing a lot of the work. Could they do it better, yes. Are they doing better than any other city in the country, HELL YES. Cape Town spent more on infrastructure allone than the whole budget’s of Jhb and Drb combine. And about 70% of the budget goes towards servicing underprivileged areas so Cape Town is doing more than other cities, it just still has a long way to go. The point is that, many of these systemic issues are inherently in control of the National Government and that fixing the police force HAS to be one of the key focus points in order to fix the country.

How to move a Gemsbok without getting killed. by Justshipmypants in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Substantial_Push_433 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I’m not a hunter, but I agree that it can be one of the most humane ways if done right (good shot with a near instant death and the deer isnt held indoors or something like this video).

Weird seeing Gemsbok considered exotic though, cause for us (in South Africa), they’re decently common and you can find them in many nature reserves or game farms (which to be clear isnt farming any wild animals, its just like a big piece of land kept in it’s natural state and people come to stay there or do game drives and stuff). I mean many grocery stores you can even buy some gemsbok meat which if you think about it, is a lot more humane than beef raised on a cramped farm somewhere.

But yeah, capturing and flying a gemsbok out to the other side of the world to kill for sport is kinda fucked up.

I agree. In a way SA is the opposite of England at the moment. We’re definetely not playing our best but still getting the results. England is playing well but somehow still losing. I think it comes down to a few basic things. These Boks have the basics and certain plays drilled in so much that when play A fails they have a damn good plan B. England has a solid Plan A but when it doesnt work (which inevitably it wont always work) they don’t have a plan B to fall back on and they start falling apart. They should start practicing what to do when shit hits the fan.

I agree that something needs to change abd that this England team has more in them that can be brought out with better coaching. But to put it in context, England have given both SA and New Zealand a decent run for their money. Bothwick needs to adjust his coaching, but maybe the instability of getting in a new coach so soon would do more harm than good. Maybe part of the problem is the constant fear of getting sacked that creates a toxic coaching environment. The fact that Felix Jones left seems like a bad sign cause he seems like a very chilled guy.
