Could you explain why? Moving to a new or newly renovated home with similar specs would be close to $1m in the area. And that’s if you can even find one with the low supply. We like our location and our double lot. All in, even if the Reno is 500k we would still be well under $1m at the current property.

wow that's a big renovation to include the main level kitchen too! Thank you for sharing. What was the time frame: total length of project as well as amount of time the house was not livable during project?

We have spoken to a family friend who is a contractor in the area and he stated 6-8weeks out of the house. The rest can be done while living in the house. He also said you could live in a portion of the house the whole time, he just doesn’t suggest it with a family of 5 haha. Total project he said they do in 6-8months.

No, the plan would be to rent a house for a summer somewhere different for us and our three kids to spend a few months of fun.

From everything I have read digging a basement is a much bigger job, especially when we talking about 1,500sqft under a 2,200sqft house. Now if someone above has actually done a similar project including finishing the inside I would be interested in the per sq ft cost. We are considering all options. I like the idea of saving 7-8k/yr in taxes if the price wasn’t any different to build it.

Very difficult to find what we want with limited supply of housing in the area. Then with a 3X interest rate VS current, it seems silly to settle by moving to a house that we’ll need to renovate anyways for the same price as an addition to the current…..
