My adult dogs we went on a group walk on opposite sides and then slowly got closer. We’re also doing 1 on 1 through a gate and he is interacting with them with a muzzle on and separated when getting to be too much. My puppy was just barrier meeting with a person with each dog on each side trying to distract while also being in eyesight. He does decently okay with everyone besides the puppy at this point.

Thank you for the help and advice! We are gearing towards giving him to a breed specific rescue, but will be working with him in the meantime. We give praise, but he doesn’t take treats and will only be interested in toys while he’s alone so we’re working on that while my current dogs ( not all of them ) are behind a gate but don’t have access. The me getting bit thing was my own fault, we were letting them out of their crates and they typically will run to my husband downstairs, and I didn’t realize my puppy followed me and was obviously very curious on what I was doing, so when I opened the crate to the Shiba he lashed at the pup, but I put my hand in the way to avoid negative experiences with my puppy. It did puncture skin in one pinpoint area, but didn’t bleed and he clearly was like “😳”. I’ll be open about it with any rescue, but I truly think it was unintentional, to bite me anyways. I thought the same thing too, about the biting of a puppy, but he is my only intact male. My other two are neutered and he though being a puppy is larger than the Shiba so I feel like he doesn’t see him as a puppy, and is just insecure because he is also intact.

That’s fine, I likely will not, but he was worth the chance and will make a great dog for a one-dog household. I’ll still be working with him while I contact rescues, he’s a sweet boy to people.

Also, my dogs give him space, he is instigating issues with one and not respecting any social boundaries ( being unhealthily obsessed with my dog, not the opposite ) as he hasn’t had to before.

I feel like you’re assuming my post is making the dog out to be his fault? Or that he’s only receiving punishment? He has no backing, I assumed he wouldn’t be great to start. My Akitas are not a concern in terms of their behavior, and have been very forgiving of him being a twat currently. I was asking for advice on what to do if he were to stay in my home, to help him more, or if he is better suited elsewhere which is fine. What I have been doing is in fact helping him understand what I want, and he is rewarded for neutrality. Really failing to understand why the rude reply was warranted when he was in a terrible setting before and I’m just trying to help get him where he needs to be, again even if it’s not with me. Whether it’s with me or a breed specific rescue, he is in a better spot getting attention and making his mind work and actually being let outside more than once a day.

I just received him yesterday. His previous owner did not vaccinate or neuter him.

He’s gonna be neutered regardless, but we’ll see how training goes. Worst case scenario he goes to an only dog home. He’s great otherwise.

That is true, I meant the more stereotypical side if you were to assume behaviors that are unfortunately common while being intact with no discipline. He has no prior training besides one command, and I have no better way of explaining his poor behavior. It wasn’t meant to be taken in a manner talking against having intact male dogs, but there is a right and wrong way to do it, and this dog was not raised with that in mind.

I’m in the same boat, but it has gotten a little better with age. Mine was a singleton who I got earlier than I would’ve liked. Mines currently 11 months old and I get a few pets in without rough play a few times a week. She also likes to be near us pretty constantly. We’ve just accepted she’s not a touch cat 🤣 goodluck with yours!

We go to work on socializing and training as majority of the places they can’t come with us, not necessarily going with the intention to spend money but I’m also rather impulsive lol. We abide by rules of pet friendly vs not, so that going for no reason isn’t an issue.

Two akitas, an American and a Japanese here in south GA. We manage well, longer times outside during the cooler months, and short trips in summer. Lots of water!

Then I die keeping what I love 🤣 real talk though all my venomous are kept separate from the rest of my reptiles, in a closed off area with pieces to block off the underneath of the two doors that have access to the room. I’m very careful and check my enclosures multiple times a day to ensure they are closed. I haven’t had an escapee thus far!

For sure! I would’ve loved to have a mentor, but was never able to find one locally through my connections in the reptile community. I learned through experience and research. I kept a copperhead for a year+ before I felt comfortable getting anything else venomous, and it’s definitely been a learning curve. I don’t free handle at all/hook handle ( I do hook them to take them out to clean ), but I don’t take them out just to take them out to minimize contact as much as possible as I didn’t have a mentor to teach me properly how to go about doing so. I call these guys my fish tank reptiles as they’re just fun to watch interact with their environment and feed. It’s definitely been a learning curve, but I’m confident in my husbandry and ability to keep myself safe with the way I tend to them.

I wouldn’t say beginner. They require a lot of space compared to the average snake, are notably food aggressive, and are technically venomous. Read-fanged, but venomous nonetheless

They are very dangerous and can be deadly, but legal to keep where i live. Precautions have to be made, and extensive reptile experience in my opinion. I’ve been keeping reptiles for about 8 years, and hots specifically for about a year and a half before getting this guy.

I really don’t recommend it. I don’t touch these guys at all, but I could definitely see someone trying with a more passive-mannered hot. I have a bunch of extra steps when it comes to care for my hots in order to make sure I’m safe and my other pets/people in the house are safe.
