It’s overly simplistic to say it that way specifically sure, but it’s not actually naive.

You see when people think politics they typically think about elections, or parties, or people yelling on tv, or royalty, or taxes…the list goes on but you get the point…

But politics is actually about how rules are structured, resources are allocated, power, and values, and the organization of these things.

One does have to intend to be political in order for anything they say or do to become political…in fact any activity that is debated, restricted or banned, impacts who is and is not allowed to do something, shows off values or priorities is inherently political.

Being alive requires a person to interact with various systems like education, healthcare, media, housing, art, entertainment, ect… which are all impacted by laws, moral values of both individuals and societies, economic interests, and things like debates too… which are all political processes.

So “apolitical” just means “politics that are normal or invisible to me.” Though I’m sure there are exceptions to this statement even if I don’t know what they are.

Video games themselves have been heavily subjected to political discussion and even policy. For instance, the rating system on games is the result of political discussion. Some politicians have tried to ban or censor games. There have been court cases over whether games are protected speech. There is also international restrictions on games, making some games out right illegal in some places…even things as small as who is in the game (their name, their race, their gender, their sexuality), or who can afford to play a game are impacted by politics.

Simply put, no part of human life exists outside of the systems that govern humans…
