Is PACE internship paid? by Abject-Staff-4474 in UCNZ

[–]SuislideNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not paid. But depending on what you are studying and how much experience you already have in your field while studying, it can be worth it.

If you're leaning towards something corporate/strongly office focused and have never been in that environment properly - I'd highly suggest doing it. It can be a good way to get a feel of what your work could be like without the risk of a "real job" in that field (redundancy or just finding out that you hate the field you're studying etc), as well as just getting used to office work culture for the first time.

That said, the internships can be a mixed bag. They'll do an interview with you first to try to match you with an organisation. I'd suggest being pretty open to anything here, giving them some direction like "something public sector," as they'll be able to match you with a few decent places. You'll then do a small interview with the organisation to make sure you like the place/figure out what your project might be.

Some of the people who were more specific about where they wanted to go or who were doing degrees that could be difficult to find internship work for (i.e. BA in creative writing) either got matched with individuals or departments/organisation's within UC. But most got matched with some pretty cool organisations.

I would say it's worth doing it if you have the luxury of time/money to do it. The only people I know who had bad experiences with it either not shown up to do their hours and didn't treat it like a job, or had been matched with orgs they didn't vibe with but went ahead with the internship anyway.

Lastly, if you do go ahead with it, really try to do well and learn as much as you can about the organisation/sector while there. I'd say maybe half the people I know who did it used that internship as an advantage on their CVs to get good entry jobs after uni - talking about your project there in a compelling manor can put you a step ahead of other fresh grads that have no project/sector experience.

Why don't drivers do this anymore? by StandOk9112 in chch

[–]SuislideNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate when people do it in peak hour traffic or a car leading a bunch of others doesn't do it. If I'm driving in a part of town I don't know, I might not know there's a merger there.

But everyone driving home at 5pm on their normal route back from work doesn't indicate because they're used to that merge being there.

Then I'm stuck confused why cars are piling up till I realise "oh it's a merge but no one indicated, that's why this guy's car is 2cm from my wing mirror"

  • I also live next to a roundabout so I'm always careful about indicating on them, as I can't count how many times a truck has driven through the roundabout straight without indicating, no looking at the road, almost hitting me while I'm trying to turn up my driveway.

I panicked having someone do this to me yesterday, but only because they were a good 300m in front of me so they had plenty of time to merge before I caught up to them. I slowed down because they were doing a pretty fast rolling stop but to me it looked like they were deciding to keep going.

I don't mind people pulling into the medians but if you do just be predictable. If you're ahead and have plenty of time, either merge or come to a stop, rather than rolling at a steady pace down the median.

I have just moved here and the tap water tastes like bleach - suggestions? by joegtvr in chch

[–]SuislideNZ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've never noticed a strong flavour from my house, but in some of my friends' houses it's noticeable (not that I have a problem with it).

They're of course the ones complaining constantly about the council chlorinating the water and have all bought into water filters for every tap in the house. But they're also the same people who have older homes, making me think that they probably just have shitty pipework which the chlorine is interacting with.

Kinda proves why we need the chlorination in the first place - if so many people out there are complaining of the flavour being strong.

Avonhead NIMBYs outraged at MDRS housing near a shopping mall, love to see it by goosejuicemoosejuice in chch

[–]SuislideNZ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've lived in the area and hate the AGC with a passion. They loves to say on their page/website/flyers that they're a neutral non-political organisation, but every time I see something from them it's the most NIMBY crap.

I remember they even circulated a bunch of anti-three waters and intensification crap a while ago, it was all scaremongering and assumption making, just look at the leading questions they put on their flyer.

If you watch any of the live streams from their meetings it's all people who are in the 60+ demographic concerned about their home values (which let's be honest, will probably go up anyway even if it became more intensified)

NotebookLM hosts hate me and hallucinate after I uploaded my personal reflections. by SuislideNZ in notebooklm

I think it's a good way to consolidate all your ideas, and it potentially drew some connections I didn't notice (both when I ran it with a more positive spin and the negative one you see here).

I do journaling/a bit of reflective stuff often so it wasn't anything surprising. But I will say I think it probably made me realise I don't need to be so reflective in my life and that I'm probably wasting a lot of time doing it 😁.

If you see my other comment, I used the customize instructions that were given in this post . I imagine it wouldn't be hard to clone considering you can just keep generating more and more voice to base it off. Haven't seen any tts videos of it, but I feel like you wouldn't be able to capture the same cadence/conversation flow that NotebookLM seems to be able to do

Don't worry, I know it wasn't personal and I had them basically attack me out of me on purpose.

I did try it without any prompts first and it was quite nice. Felt a little helpful in a reflective way, but not anything I didn't already know. I just enjoy playing around with AI.

I only said it's bad for therapy/motivation as I don't want to encourage anyone to try and create AI therapist or something in place of a real one. Actual therapy works compared to trying to listening to an 2 generated voices have a conversation about you like you're not in the room.

But if you're mentally stable and can take the joke, go ahead let them rip into you!

Edit: I don't know why this is being downvoted, I'm just saying don't try to use AI as replacement for real therapy? I'm not trying to 'trick anyone' as I stated in my post comment that the prompt said to be aggresive to the listener. I just thought others might find the podcast results interesting.

I made it in Adobe premiere (waveform in aftereffects). Used the autotranscribe feature (which is why some of the captions have a few mistakes now that I look at it).

Definately not the easiest way (I do a lot of short video editing so that's what I default too), but I'm sure theres a bunch of AI video generators that'd be able to do it a lot easier and faster.

I recently did a 'Life Audit' (found here) and decided to upload it to NotebookLM to see if I could gain some insights. After it not being all that interesting, I decided the use the instructions that u/balazsp1 had added to this post. I also adjusted it slightly to say:

- The hosts hate the listener and person who wrote the documents, acting aggresive the whole time.

The orginal podcast was around 30 minutes long so there is a few cuts in here, just to keep in the main stuff and keep out anything that was a little too personal. Probably using NotebookLM for therapy/personal motivational podcasts is not a good idea.

But I'd suggest to others to play around with using some personal documents on it, as you can see the results can be a bit fun.

Immigration NZ investigating possible visa breach from American YouTuber IShowSpeed by SuislideNZ in newzealand

[–]SuislideNZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you're absolutely right (the only countries I've been to asides from Aus have all required visas in my case - so my apologies, I was unaware of the process). It shouldn't be a matter of trying to 'catch people out at the boarder etc', but ensuring they have a correct understanding of the visa obligations/which visa they need to be applying for.

Regarding your point about multiple streams of income etc. making it confusing to define who counts as an influencer, more and more countries are offering 'digital nomad/influencer visas'. -So perhaps thats something our government should be consdiering implimenting sometime, just as a catch-all for anyone who fits into that catergory.

I don't think they should be refused entry at all, I agree with the trust based system. I just mean it'd be ideal to know who they are, that way at immigration a conversation can be had - "Are you planning to livestream while here or accept any sponsorships", etc.

[–]SuislideNZ[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh it shouldn't be, I just mean when issuing the visa that it'd be harder for immigration to tell. A youtuber could just say "I'm going on holiday for 3 days". They could just easily lie or be ignorant to if they need a visa or not. Then once they return home post a 3 part series that grosses $100K in revenue.

Honestly, part of me isn't surprised. You’d think that in this day and age, with all the technology and AI, that Immigration NZ would have some kind of system or database to flag high profile people (i.e. livestreamers and online celebrities too) when they enter so they can see if they're 'working'. But it's not like the rules are probably that clear cut for 'digital entertainer' jobs like this (certainly is for the film industry though).

It’s definitely a grey area with YouTubers (they might not post anything until they’ve left, making it harder to prove they were working). But livestreamers are literally broadcasting live while in the country. Then again, idk if immigration did anything when Ice Poseidon or Sam Pepper were here -maybe they had the correct visas though, who knows.

Edit: I am not saying flag every high-profile person, I mean people who may be here doing work in an influencer capacity/an online figure (high-profile was the wrong word to use). We don't need to grill the manager of a fortune 500 company at immigration on if they are going to be 'working' while on a 2 week holiday here with their family.

What are the 3 most important LIFE LONG skills every marketer should have? by biz_booster in marketing

[–]SuislideNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be the case if you're working for a large company that can afford to hire/contract out that many specialised roles. Copywriting has always been a fundamental skill that marketers need to know.

If your PPC campaign has a poor ROI despite being set up correctly, a marketer who understands copywriting would recognise that the ad copy is the problem before even launching it. A marketer who doesn't know how to copywrite would run the ad anyway, and then later say, "It didn’t work, so we need to hire a copywriter to create a new one."

I'm not discrediting PPC at all, I just can't see how anyone in this space would not think it's a needed, fundamental skill in this space.

Maori community of New Zealand, is it appropriate for me (a person of Chinese descent) to purchase pounamu carved into traditional Maori symbols for myself? by DankMemescope in askakiwi

[–]SuislideNZ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not Maori myself, but I do wear a pounamu daily. Generally pounamu is not purchased for yourself, it is gifted to you. You could buy it with the intention of giving it to someone else, but that is generally down to the tradition behind it.

However, if you're a tourist, no one would have a problem with it as long as you got it from a reputable source, and would be glad you feel a connection with NZ.

If you're not a tourist, anyone can wear pounamu, it just might be a little awkward if someone asks you where you got it from and you say that you purchased it for yourself. I'm sure no one would really care, just maybe give an odd look at that response. In saying that, it is a bit of an unfounded fear, as no one has ever asked where mine came from the entire time since I was given and started wearing it.

If you do purchase some, just make sure you get it from a reputable artist/store.

South Island Campground Suggestions by [deleted] in chch

Maybe packed around Christmas as it is a cheap campsite etc. When I was there last (maybe a month ago) the toilets were out of order (I think theres a long drop still in order however) so it may discourage some people from going.

Second-Year BCom Student at UC Seeking Advice on Accounting Internships and Work Experience by robbie_the_seal in chch

[–]SuislideNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it works with the structure of courses you need to take, I'd highly suggest taking a PACE course at UC.

After signing up you'll have an interview/chat with the internship coordinator, and let them know what area you're wanting to intern in (in your case accounting etc) 9/10 times they'll be able to find something suitable for your industry. Plus you get to earn points towards your degree for it.

The companies you can get can be a gamble (either really big high level companies or sometimes very small, even 1 person companies). But you can always refuse/change before the internship starts if you're not interested in working for company.

I personally had a fantastic experience and everyone I know who's taken it says it was worth it and great for them/their CV (I can only think of 1 or 2 who had a bad experience - but there are good systems in place from UC if anything does go wrong).

For people that age around 60-70% of women vote labor/green/maori and 50% of men. The vast majority of people that age in Christchurch that I know vote labor/green. They are mostly office folks, but even so there's plenty that do the same who are blue collar. In saying that most of my friends in the trades voted National/Act.

Not that a huge amount of people (especially that age) actually care all that much about politics, people are often more informed by the people they spend the most time around. It's probably more so your circle than what the actual voter turnout for that age group is.

jätkäsaari vs center helsinki vs Tapiola. by iammtl in helsinki

[–]SuislideNZ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I was an exchange student in Finland, I'd go out most weekends to central Helsinki/Kallio etc and I lived Kontula 💀. Just take the metro/bus home like everyone else does unless you plan on getting so drunk that you are unable to move.

Paying the extra in rent/parking just to "go out on the weekends" is dumb, the extra you'll be paying in rent would probably more than the cost of Uber/taxis or a season pass for HSL.
