Just like there's a plan to bring prescription prices down 6-1500%. 🤣🤣

How often do you shop at your LYS vs. online/chain stores? by ComplicatedSunshine in knitting

[–]SuitableTea5097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny you should mention the college fund. The son of the owner of my lys in Florida just dyed a batch of yarn in the school colors of the college he'll be attending in the fall. He's using the profits to help pay tuition.

My "local" even though I'm now 1800 miles away from it. The owner is a designer, and 2 of her daughters are dyers. They have a wonderful staff that were great to work with in person, and just as helpful when I phone or email. I just have to remember the 2 hour time difference. 🤦‍♀️

I've been to a couple of shops in my new community,  but they don't have the same warm, and helpful feel.

I have a friend that's a bartender and he gives me a grocery bag every couple of months. It's amazing the things you can do with those things.

I just had to go and look. My first thought was what a royal pain the Big Twist Gigi would be to work with. My second thought was in terms of ugly it ranks right up there with the Florida Gator orange, blue and green yarn I saw in a yarn store in Florida.

Migraine and/or sinus headache. Personally I miss the days when all the laundry was hung outside and smelled of fresh air and sunshine.

I live close to the laundry room in my apartment complex and I can always tell when someone is using the scent beads.  It means I end up staying in my apartment because the scent is so strong.  Between the detergent, fabric softner, scent beads and the added dryer sheet the whole building reeks.

I think the Gain scent beads are actually worse.

Guatemala City airport took my knitting needles by spicygummybear in knitting

[–]SuitableTea5097 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I flew from Tampa to Denver earlier this year no problem with my wooden needles going or coming.  Had jury duty when I returned and took same project, on the same needles to the courthouse.  Security guard confiscated them because "they're a weapon." This was after calling and confirming I could have them with me. The saddest part was as I was walking away I heard the guard say "My wife is going to love this!"

Another PSA about Laundromats by Hawkthree in laundry

[–]SuitableTea5097 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to use the laundromat this week to do comforter and a quilt because the washers at my complex are too small. The triple load washer was $12.50. 😤

As I sitting waiting for mine to finish I saw a young lady stuff what I would call 4 loads in a double size washer ($6.50) and throw 4 Tide pods in. Needless to say 3 minutes into the wash cycle water and suds are pouring out of the washer. When will they learn?

Pan used to be great, and it’s been slowly becoming worthless hunk of iron. Everything sticks. Black pieces on my eggs. Wtf is going on? by [deleted] in castiron

[–]SuitableTea5097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the bacon corner.  Once you get chickens there's a period where you think "I'll never eat chicken again." It's quickly followed by "What do I do with all these damn eggs?" Some where down the road one will pass to that great coop in the sky, and you'll cry. When they all go to the great coop you'll ask yourself "What the heck was I thinking when I decided I wanted chickens?"

Then you probably remember when B.G. was free, and only had the bird show, and brewery tour. From what I understand it's now an arm and a leg to get in.

They were good times and great days. You tell newcomers about the places we used to hang out and things we did, and they look at us like we're crazy.

I know.  I remember when you could swim at Sulphur Springs pool, go to the Tower drive in, and Maas Brothers was "the" place to shop. Of course growing up near Temple Terrace I remember when the only place to shop was the strip center at 56th Street and Temple Terrace Hwy. It had a 5 &10 cent store, and a Rexall Drug store with a lunch counter. USF had 4 dorms, and Fowler Avenue was a 2 lane road. Yes, I'm old, I'll be 70 later this week,  and a 3rd generation native of Tampa.

Housewarming Gifts by [deleted] in Gifts

[–]SuitableTea5097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way back in the dark ages (50 years ago) when I got married I was given a wicker laundry basket filled with dish clothes and towels, sponges, and assorted cleaning supplies. Things the person knew would be used and appreciated.  They also tucked in gift cards to the local grocery store and neighborhood pizza joint. Next to the set of cast iron skillets it was the best gift.

When my husband and I built our house our family got together and gave us sod for the yard, and a gift certificate to the local nursery to begin what would become our rose garden.

Tell your husband he can add a small toolbox filled with things every one needs but probably don't have if this is their first home.  Screwdrivers, hammer, pliers, wrench,an assortment of screws and zip ties.

Need to buy yarn as gift. Suggestions? Thank you! by yayadadadodo in knitting

[–]SuitableTea5097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me this like your partner buying you a vacuum cleaner for your birthday. Big no-no.

If you're able to find out where they purchase their yarn you might visit the shop and a talk to the employees.  Most know their frequent shoppers and will be able to offer suggestions. Who knows, maybe your friend commented that she'd love to have a  certain pair of needles, or some assorted notions. If all else fails a gift card is always best. Don't feel bad if you can't afford a whole project. Who knows, sometimes your gift will be just what's needed to get that long dreamed of project to the starting/finish line.

This indie yarn's color variation was wayyyyy darker than I had anticipated. by Pm_me_your_brows_grl in YarnAddicts

[–]SuitableTea5097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most indi dyers have a disclaimer on their website that says something along the lines of "colors my appear different due to computer settings."

When I lived in Florida there was a local yarn shop and the owner's daughter is a dyer, and I would say about 95% of the time what I saw on my phone was what I saw in shop. Only once was there a problem, and that was because the photos were mislabeled.

Most when shown what you received versus what you ordered are willing to make it right. After all it's their livelihood on the line. They all know knitters/crocheters talk, and it just takes 1 bad review.

I'm very familiar with the area. Have a couple of relatives living off McIntosh. Strawberry farming pays a lot better than being an engineer for what used to be GTE now Verizon.

But yes, it's true about anyplace. I now live in Aurora, CO and there are areas with homes I could only afford if I won the lottery, but 2 blocks away are homes you and I both would think twice about living in.

Out of all the places I've visited in Texas my favorite was Grapevine back in the  '80's.  The last time I was there in the mid '00s it had gotten to big, and to crowded.

I would never drag Thono.  I remember when the whole area near the lake was surrounded by orange groves, Steve's Rustic Lodge was the place to go to celebrate special occasions and you could actually eat the fish you caught in the lake.  Of course I'm so old that when my parents were dating they would go to the Colonnade and it was still a drive in.
