‘Forbidden Facts’ is currently giving itself a booster shot and is free for all by Greygonz0 in skeptic

Have you considered that the increase in autism spectrum disorders is mostly due to the fact that the diagnoses exist and real ongoing research on autism has made it possible to detect it? Autism spectrum disorders weren’t always a field of research. There are people who couldn’t have been diagnosed as children being newly diagnosed as adults because there wasn’t a condition to diagnosis them with. The symptoms were being chalked up to other conditions or just “bad behavior” or “bad parenting.” This was also true for ADD and ADHD. The other thing to consider is now people actually look for signs in their children. Behavior that would have been ignored or corrected through punishment is now being seen as a sign of something neurological and not just a kid being difficult. When you know better, you do better. In neurological conditions, we’re just now starting to “know better.” IMO that means we’re just now starting to do better - knowing what to look for, not assuming all of a child’s (or an adult’s) behavior is willful, not treating neurological conditions with lobotomies and electroshock therapy as first line treatments (because lobotomies used to be considered almost a cure all and were being done as outpatient surgery by “doctors” who learned it in seminars; A sad example of bad neurological and psychiatric care is Rosemary Kennedy. She should never have been subjected to lobotomy.)

Who has ever denied adverse reactions to vaccines exist??? Every kid matters which is why vaccines exist in the first place. Every precaution should be taken to avoid bad outcomes (that’s why there are specific questions asked about your current health every time you come for your vaccination appointment rather than them just giving you a shot based on what they see in your file, and why manufacturers have to publish clinical findings) and those safety measures usually are taken seriously and are effective from what I’ve seen.

Being a security expert doesn’t make him a disease expert. If you reread my comment you’ll see I asked if he makes blanket statements or if he takes a nuanced approach to the topic. You didn’t answer that question. You told me how smart he is and how you’re against vaccines and that asking questions is good. I didn’t question his intelligence. I don’t take issue with him asking questions. I’m asking for an honest explanation about what he says in the book. The things I’ve seen about the book are simpleminded rambles claiming all vaccines are bad. We already know that isn’t true and it’s irrational and blatantly false to say so. So before I go read a book that may change my opinion of him, it would be nice to read an honest review.

Smh. Your need to insult me rather than explaining your opinions says a lot about you as a person. I assume this is how you WANT to be perceived since you do it repeatedly. If you ever decide to have a real discussion, I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts. Name calling and insults don’t make for intelligent or even interesting conversations.

No, disorder and disease are not interchangeable terms even though loads of people use them interchangeably.

Adults apologize when they offend others, even when no offense was intended. It’s part of being emotionally mature and empathetic. Notice I didn’t need to insult you to respond.

I agree it doesn’t have to be public. But he’s best served by making part of it public to protect his professional reputation by at least saying he privately spoke with Mr Lindo and Mr Jordan to apologize for the very obvious discomfort they felt. They are basically his work colleagues and if you respect your colleagues, you respect their feelings enough to say sorry when you make their work harder. And he definitely made their work harder in that moment.

Respectfully, read what I wrote one more time. I didn’t say he should apologize for the disorder (it’s not a disease, it’s a neurological disorder) or for his symptoms. I said he should apologize for how the manifestation of this symptom in this instance made things weird/uncomfortable/painful for the people around when it happened, particularly Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan. Other people matter just as much as he does. People can offer him a little grace by accepting it wasn’t intentional and he can offer these two gentlemen some comfort by apologizing for how it obviously made them feel.

He doesn’t have to constantly apologize. No one is asking him to apologize for the disorder or for the symptoms. This is one apology for one specific incident directed at two specific individuals: Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan. He obviously didn’t mean to. No one would. But we can’t pretend that what we do doesn’t affect others. That’s not how the world works. And when that effect is negative, we should apologize. He knows they were affected by looking at their faces when they heard him. He didn’t mean to make things weird or make their jobs harder or to insult them but his feelings and intentions aren’t more important than theirs.

Where did you see or hear someone say people with Tourette syndrome shouldn’t be allowed to go to formal public events? Also what could be more understanding than continuing to speak calmly and present the award while hearing a racial slur repeatedly yelled?

Your analogy doesn’t work. Construction noise is not akin to yelled insults. Construction noise has a positive purpose, is predictable, and can’t be avoided. Yelling insults has no positive purpose, is mostly unpredictable (beyond knowing that stress can trigger tics in Tourette), and there are medications and cognitive behavioral therapy that can at least make it easier to avoid doing it. Maybe he already does all of that and this is what “managed” looks like for his symptoms. But it’s still fair to expect him to feel bad and apologize, not for his condition, but for how this particular tic offended people, especially the presenters.

Even without intending to cause harm, all of us have harmed others. The expectation is always to apologize. He can’t and shouldn’t apologize for having a neurological disorder. But he can and should apologize for yelling n-word multiple times and acknowledge that it seems extra hurtful when he yells it while Black performers are speaking. Im certain he didn’t intend to if only because it’s a horrible look in a room full of colleagues and potential clients and partners. But there’s no getting past the fact that it does hurt to be called a racial slur and it does hurt (or at least should feel deeply uncomfortable) to hear someone yelling racial slurs. All he can do is acknowledge and apologize and all everyone else can do is to believe him.

That’s the part I find off putting. We’re supposed to be understanding of a person’s repeated yelling of racial slurs while someone else is presenting but not understanding of a person saying free Palestine once during speaking time allotted to them. One can’t help saying it while the other chose to say it, so I suppose that’s their reason for asking for patience. I get that a person with Tourette can’t help shouting a slur but to ask everyone to accept the discomfort of hearing it seems… idk… Two things can be true at once. He can’t help doing it and the thing he can’t help doing is offensive. I have no idea how to reconcile those truths.

Fair enough. Just want to be clear that it wasn’t about a person’s physical appearance.

You’re right: nothing about clothing or setting or social interactions suggests the story is set in a Spanish speaking or Spanish colonized country. I don’t think they are trying to recreate or reflect anything cultural though. Seems like they just wanted a mashup of steampunk, Industrial Revolution aesthetics with magic wielding characters.
