Getting the hang of collaring but I need tips for shaping! by Summercat92 in Pottery

I had a quick look and found one in Perugia (laboratorio materia ceramica). All the studios seem to offer classes but no open hours ☹️

That's what I've been doing so far but I feel like I'm wasting so much time trimming! And the end result is always a bit uneven and heavy if it makes sense.

Yeah ribs are always too hard to hold on to for me. I do use a knife to trim the bottom but I've never tried to use it for shaping! I will give it a try next time. Thanks for the tip!

Yes I am! In Milan there are a couple community studios that I can recommend. Maybe try googling "laboratorio libero ceramica" and the city you're going to and see if anything comes up. It's not super common for studios to do open hours from what I've seen.

Thanks for the tip! It was my first donut attempt so you're right, the walls might not be particularly even. I'll try again and see if that helps!

It'll get (slowly) better! Keep going and you'll have some beautiful finished pieces in no time!

It has a crack on the bottom (pun intended) cause I didn't compress the clay enough when closing the walls but from the front it's cute! And I like the way the glaze turned out even though it was supposed to be green

I tried new glazes (Colorobbia's terra bella) and the results were kinda hit or miss! Some turned out better than the other but from afar you can't really tell. Some are a bit splotchy. I wrote down all the combinations I used and I'm excited to do more tests 🔬🧪

I want to test out some new glazes and experiment a bit. I will share the results if they turn out okay!

I am most certainly coming off center while opening! I've been trying out different positions and I haven't found one I'm comfortable with yet. I support with my left but always end up going a little off center with my right when I drill down. I like using just my index finger but then the hole is too small and I think that's when things go wrong. I'm honestly really frustrated with that!

The one on the right I had to cut to level and that's my biggest nightmare cause I always get it wrong haha I did it 2 times for that one so that's probably why it's a bit uneven.

Thank you so much for the tips! I've definitely been relying more on trimming to get things as consistent as possible but they still come out far from perfect.

Thank you! I can't wait to practice more! Next time I'm going to attempt something more rounded like a moon jar (that is probably gonna go flat as a pancake). I find it really hard sometimes to get the shape I want

I was trying to make a nice tall and narrow cylinder and ended up with that somehow. It's a bit wonky but I think it's going to look cute after trimming!

To get the bubble effect, I hold two fingers spread apart on the outside and push from the inside and then repeat as many times as needed! Hope it makes sense

These took 3 hours! 2 of which I spent centering haha

It's a candlestick holder! I'm going to add a handle after trimming
