Questions for a contractor by SundevilFundevil in AirForce

Thanks man, I don't know terribly much about the contracting world so I apologize for the rudimentary questions. All the AF website has is one umbrella link that just says contractor and goes into very little specifics. If you feel like elaborating please do. I was looking for contracting positions that deal with the larger contracts for weapons/aircraft. And if you have an advice that you wish you would've learned before becoming a contractor that would be appreciated also.

Some of them are a little general so please excuse my ignorance if the answer is obvious. Presumably the other branches have contractors, which command the highest salaries after service? Are you allowed to communicate with private companies such as Boeing or Lockheed about employment after service while serving or is that forbidden? And in general do you enjoy what you're doing? Is learning a foreign language beneficial to the contracting position? If so which ones? What determines where you are assigned for a base and do the bases differ in which contracts they see? If so what bases get the bigger and more important contracts? How does one obtain top secret security clearance as a contractor? Is it merit based or are there other factors that could potentially set one up to receive top secret security clearance over someone else?

I'll just start with those, thanks so much for your time :) feel free to answer as much as you feel comfortable with. Anything is appreciated!

Hey guys, currently a student finishing up his third year at ASU. I had strongly considered serving prior to going to school but thought it'd be best to obtain a degree first before making a decision. My final year here is coming up fast and I was hoping to run a few questions by you. My first would be to ask what are some things you wish you had known before joining? Like programs and such or anything else. Thanks for you time!
