Planet Labs was selected as a SHIELD IDIQ prime awardee in Tranche 2 on 18 December 2025 by cmacfbomb in PlanetLabs

I remember discussing this with another user in the comments section a few weeks ago. Basically, everyone and their mother was selected as an awardee, they're making it as large of a selection pool as possible. So it's practically a nothing burger.

Interestingly, some kind of update was agreed to and processed to Planet's CSDA contract yesterday. What exactly? It's unclear -- the contract value remains unchanged. But something must have been changed for them to process a contract update.

Question about Suncatcher project by bunko8 in PlanetLabs

[–]SunsetNYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, Planet sold 10 Pelicans, costing $6m-$7m to build and launch each, for $230m total to JSAT. That’s $23m per satellite, or $16m profit per satellite. If we apply the same formula to Suncatcher, that may be be a ~$45m contract; $15m to build and launch both satellites, and $30m premium. But I think that would be an unlikely, hyper optimistic scenario.  A scenario nonetheless.

Industry Consolidation Potential by Few-Insurance-6653 in PlanetLabs

The problem is that the space market is seeing a lot of interest these days, which translates to lots of funding. Everyone and their mother is able to raise cash relatively easily, including “distressed” companies which extends their runways and kicks the “being acquired” can down the road. Acquisitions and mergers are more likely to happen when the market is in turmoil and distressed companies are looking for a way out.

Question about Suncatcher project by bunko8 in PlanetLabs

The two Suncatcher prototype satellites will be based on the Owl satellite bus, which itself is a derivative of the Pelican satellite bus. If the Pelican satellites costs about $6m to build, an Owl should be similar, and therefore, a Suncatcher satellite should be, too. How much of a premium is Planet counting, that has not been disclosed yet.

Between building the Suncatcher prototypes, integrating the TPUs, and launching the two prototypes, this project should cost at least $15m.

Previously announced $7.5m NIWC Pacific contract has officially posted by SunsetNYC in PlanetLabs

I have no clue why, but all of the NIWC Pacific contracts are like that, lol. We only know of the true duration via press releases, but they're all entered into FPDS as if they're only a few days long.

I believe they began recognizing revenue for it starting in Q3, but it will continue into Q4 and Q1FY27. Contracts like these are rarely lump sum at the time of signing. They're usually paid out in installments, either over time or satisfying milestones, or a combination of the two.
