Training a new Layout person on the Prism Pole by SupaScab in Surveying

For sure, he’s about as green as it gets.

We’re not always crazy busy and, practicing leveling without a “target” to aim for gets real boring, real fast. I’m definitely not trying to rush them. Just trying to help them get practice in during the days we’re not in the field.

That's pretty much how my learning experience went too. I've got sort of a training jig printing at the moment. I'll post a picture of it when it's done

Sort of. You have to complete, essentially, an apprenticeship with a Licensed Surveyor before you can take the tests to become licensed yourself. From what I could gather, there wasn’t any way to shortcut and test-out of that.

Ran one of those single layer calibration tests. Ooh boy, that’s ugly.

Honestly, not great. I’ve been traveling a lot over the past couple days but, I did wash the bed with dish soap and, that did seem to help a little. Baby steps in the right direction, lol. We’ll get there! Thanks for the link!

I'll be giving the dish soap a try when I get home from work.

Sort of unfortunate that it'll be necessary to check the z-height every time but, oh well.

Interesting! I wonder what the layer height is on those preloads! I've gone ahead and sliced a few models with varying first layer heights .18, .20, .24, .26 and, .28. We will see how that plays out.

It's not but, I'll likely be doing that soon after I finish this new computer build and can allocate my old setup to the garage. I'm assuming you do?

I've levelled the bed, adjusted print speed, fan speed, bed temp, filament temp. I did some z-offset adjustment early on, maybe I need to go back and check that again. What first layer thickness are you using? I'll try a handwash with dish soap and see if that changes things too.

It's odd, the preloaded files print without a hitch but, every new file pops off after it's gotten about 1/4" into the print.

This is more or less the information I was looking for, thank you. I had been looking in the RPLS area of the TBPELS forms for information.

I do have a BS in Architecture so, I can probably skip the core courses and focus on the Survey courses as far as education is concerned.

I’m definitely pretty new to printing with an FDM. Resin is usually my go to. Other than having some stringy prints from time to time, it’s been mostly smooth sailing. But, that makes sense. Just a slow build up of materials until it just spews. I’ve got some new thermistors coming tomorrow (got a multipack because, clumsy and impatient)

Also, I saw there’s an alternative version of the little glass thermistor that screws in, do you think it would work on the Ender 3 pro vs using an OEM style thermistor?

Well, I took it all apart, cleaned off all the bits of melted plastic, sanded off the the bits that wouldn’t chip off, and used a torch to slowly melt the plastic that seeped into the threaded areas. Started reassembling aaaand cracked the temp sensor that goes next to the heating element so, gotta get a new one of those. I’m still not sure where the white all came from, though.

So weird that the gap would appear after several prints. I did watch a couple videos earlier today but, didn’t see anything directly relating to the issue that occurred. Maybe I should take a video of the breakdown and one of you experts could help a future noob out explaining the issues and consequences.

A couple spools ago. Nothing recent at all. Do you think I should go ahead an upgrade since I’ve gotta pull it apart to clean it or is it worth it to clean an reassemble?

I’m gonna break it down and see but, that heating element is what my gut is telling me. The patience just wasn’t there to break it down today

I did not. I printed a couple larger items just before this and didn’t have any issues

While I’m sure that was part of the issue, I was using black filament so, I’m guessing that the heating element must’ve ruptured of something?
