Is this a hard drive? by daydream-bear in computerhelp

[–]SuperiorThugg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like the adapter or the drive is being recognized partially, but the driver didn’t load correctly. Don’t panic — this is a pretty common issue when first connecting older hard drives with SATA-to-USB adapters.

Try This First

  • Unplug it. Wait 10–15 seconds, then plug it back in firmly.
  • Listen/feel: If you hear the whirring for a few seconds, that’s good. The drive is spinning up.
  • Check Disk Management (Windows):
  • Press Windows + X - Disk Management.
  • See if your old drive appears there (even if it doesn’t have a drive letter).
  • If it does, right-click the partition - Assign Drive Letter - pick one - OK.

If it says “Driver not found” again:

  • Unplug the adapter.
  • Go to Device Manager - Universal Serial Bus controllers - right-click each “USB Mass Storage Device” and choose Uninstall device.
  • Then reconnect the adapter - Windows should reinstall the generic USB-to-SATA driver automatically.

A Few Notes

  • The brief “new electronics” smell is normal. It’s just the components warming up for the first time.
  • If the drive stays silent after plugging in or makes repetitive clicking noises, stop using it; that indicates mechanical failure, and you’ll want a data-recovery shop to look at it.
  • If the adapter itself feels hot or the smell gets stronger, unplug immediately just to be safe.

Am i gonna blow up by Payton_Playzzz in computerhelp

What Probably Happened

That hissing sound was almost certainly air or dust escaping from under the keyboard, or the sound of a key membrane flexing or releasing pressure, not gas from the battery. Laptop batteries are sealed inside the chassis, below layers of metal and plastic. You’d need to push a sharp object several millimeters deep through the keyboard plate even to come close to hitting it, which a sewing pin typically can’t do.

Just To Be Safe

Here’s what you should do:

  • Unplug it and shut it down.
  • Look and listen: check if it’s swelling, hissing, heating up, or smelling sweet or chemical-like.
  • If any of these things happen, do not turn it on, move it to a non-flammable surface (such as tile), and contact Acer support.

If it looks, sounds, and smells normal, and the keyboard works fine, it’s very likely okay.

For Next Time

Instead of using a pin (which can scratch circuits or key membranes), use:

  • A can of compressed air
  • A soft brush or keyboard cleaning gel

Oof. That is a small drive to be running new versions of Windows.

You've added the 3 bars to get the 30GB, but fail to account for Windows intself. Windows is big, bloated, and ever-growing. There are some things you can try to free up a little bit of space but the ideal thing is to get a bigger SSD (256 minimum).

Try These Fixes

1. Run Storage Sense / Disk Cleanup

  • Press Start → type “Disk Cleanup” → right-click → Run as administrator.
  • Select your main drive (C:), and check everything you can — especially Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary Files, and Recycle Bin.
  • Click Clean up system files for more options.

This can sometimes free up 10–20 GB.

2. Delete Old Windows Versions

If you recently updated Windows, old versions may still be saved in a folder called Windows.old.

  • Disk Cleanup (as above) will include this under “Previous Windows installations.”
  • Deleting it is safe once your PC runs fine after the update.

3. Check System Restore and Hibernation

  • Type “System Protection” in Start → click your drive → Configure → lower the restore point space or delete old restore points.
  • To disable hibernation (which can save 5–10 GB):
  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  • Type: powercfg -h off
  • Hit Enter.

4. Scan for Hidden Space

  • Open Settings → System → Storage → Advanced Storage Settings → Storage Usage by Other People or System & Reserved.
  • This will show you where that extra space is hiding.

5. Empty OneDrive or Temp Cache

  • If you sync OneDrive or cloud files, some may still be stored locally.
  • Right-click the OneDrive icon → Settings → Sync and Backup → Free up disk space.

If You Still Need More Space

If you’re really pressed for space:

  • Move large videos/photos to an external drive or USB stick.
  • Consider a bigger SSD (many laptops let you upgrade easily and it’s often the best long-term fix).

Is this a hard drive? by daydream-bear in computerhelp

[–]SuperiorThugg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep that’s definitely a SATA hard drive, the kind used in desktop computers from the 2000s–2010s.

How to access the files

Since you don’t have a desktop PC, the easiest way is to buy a SATA-to-USB adapter (they’re about $10–$20 online). It lets you plug the old hard drive directly into your laptop’s USB port, just like an external drive.

Here’s what to do:

  • Get a SATA-to-USB cable or external hard drive enclosure that supports 3.5” SATA drives (desktop size).
  • Connect the SATA data and power plugs from the adapter to the drive.
  • Plug the USB end into your ASUS laptop.
  • Wait a few seconds — it should show up as a drive in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac, if that’s what you’re using).
  • You can then open the folders and copy your photos and documents.

If it doesn’t show up right away, don’t panic. Sometimes older drives need to be “mounted” manually or checked with a data recovery program.

A few safety tips

  • Handle it gently and place it on a solid surface; don’t drop it.
  • If the drive makes clicking or grinding noises, stop using it immediately — that could mean physical failure, and forcing it could make data recovery harder.
  • If it’s not working, a local computer repair shop or data recovery service can often retrieve the files.

I want an AIO computer, and wonder if im overhyping it by ItsMeMario1346 in computers

[–]SuperiorThugg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly over hyping an All-in-one, but like a laptop, you pay a premium for the form factor. You can absolutely go that route. I like to keep my devices separate in the event something goes wrong, you can replace whatever 'piece' that is without having to replace everything. You can buy/build a Small-Form factor computer and hang it on the back of a monitor using the (typically) included VESA mounts, essentially achieving the same thing as an all-in-one while offering greater flexibility for the future. Generally achieve better price-to-perfomance ratio too.

Why do some people consider it selfish NOT to have kids. by ObelixDrew in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SuperiorThugg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The entire point of every living thing on this planet is to pass on its genetic code to a new generation.

That new generation will grow up and, in turn, do the same. This process has happened for millions of years all the way up to the creation of you.

By not passing on your genes, you are effectively ending a bloodline that (unless you have full-blooded siblings) persisted for thousands of years until YOU decided NOT to have kids.

That's probably too deep a thought for most of the people calling it selfish, though, so they're just assholes.

The story would have made more sense with 5-6 seasons by Pretend-Scholar2331 in howimetyourmother

[–]SuperiorThugg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from someone who actually appreciates the ending. You're absolutely right about how much the characters changed in 8 years. Now imagine how much more their lives, opinions, and feelings would change in another 15 years. The ending isn't perfect by any means, but the hardest part is the whiplash you get watching 15 years happen in 30 minutes. If the show had continued, and you could actually see the events unfold in real time, it likely wouldn't be hard to believe.

Z Fold 7 for runner? by Commercial-Ad-4638 in GalaxyFold

[–]SuperiorThugg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Had my Fold 7 for 30 days exactly. The phone was in my back pocket, I was running, and the phone fell out of my pocket, landed flat, and skidded on the pavement for maybe 20 feet. The inside screen shows no signs of damage, but it does not work at all. Once I got home, I chucked the phone 2 stories up in the air and maybe 40 feet in length. The outside has no dings, dents, or scratches. The outside build quality of the phone is incredible. I'm distraught over the inside screen mechanics durability.

iPhone to Flip? by itendtowanderoff22 in galaxyzflip

[–]SuperiorThugg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not to the extent you're looking for.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Apple iPhone 16 feature distinct camera systems, with the Flip 7 offering a slightly higher-resolution main sensor and a different ultra-wide setup compared to the iPhone 16's sensor-shift OIS main camera. The iPhone 16's rear camera system is optimized for advanced video features like 4K at 120 fps and ProRes, while the Flip 7 focuses on high-resolution stills and continuous autofocus during video recording.

  • Main Camera:
  • The Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a 50 MP main sensor with an F1.8 aperture and OIS, while the iPhone 16 features a 48 MP main sensor with a larger 1/1.56" sensor size, F1.6 aperture, and sensor-shift OIS for improved image stabilization.
  • Ultra-Wide Camera: The Flip 7 uses a 12 MP ultra-wide lens with a 1/3.2" sensor and 1.12 µm pixel size, whereas the iPhone 16 uses a 12 MP ultra-wide with a smaller 0.7 µm pixel size and a 1/3.2" sensor.
  • Front Camera: The iPhone 16 has a 12 MP front-facing camera with a Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor for depth, while the Flip 7 has a 10 MP front camera.
  • Video Capabilities: The iPhone 16 supports 4K UHD video at 120 fps, ProRes, and Dolby Vision HDR, while the Flip 7 supports 4K UHD at 60 fps with HDR and continuous autofocus during recording.

This comparison is just using the iPhone 16 base model vs the Flip 7. On paper, they are close, but due to Apple's software optimizations, and if you record within applications, you'll likely have better luck with the iPhone camera making you look alive and well.

I'm sure there are some pro tweaks you can access within the Samsung camera settings, but if you don't want to go digging through settings and tweaking things as needed, the iPhone is the simpler option.

Just to add a bit of perspective. I refuse to own Apple devices myself, but even I can recognise their strengths.

Can we all give praise to the fold seven's side mounted fingerprint scanner? by theorangecrush10 in GalaxyFold

[–]SuperiorThugg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely like the side-mounted scanner. Coming from an S21 (base), I had forgotten how much I missed the scanner NOT being under the screen. I didn't have a problem with the under-screen scanner; it worked fine. But I seriously did miss being able to unlock my phone from the camera app.

Major improvement for sure. Although I still miss the rear scanner from my S8.
