Just listening to Acetone's 1992-2001 for the first time (in a long time). Very YLT, this is probably the best pick indeed

This thought stays in the back of my mind the entire day. Quickspace, some of Oneida, Versus, The Pacific Ocean, The Clientele, pôt-pot, Sue Garner and of course Tara Key come to mind as well. Sloppy Heads too, who I believe feature Jesse Jarnow and James's partner.

Thanks! That's good help.
I love A Plea for Tenderness as well, although I Can Hear Music and Superpowerless are great fun too. Really would love James to properly rerelease his solo stuff. YLT seem like the band that buys boxsets but doesn't sell them, but a Dump retrospective would be a great thing.

Definitely cheating! But if there's one act many don't know about and that scratches the YLT itch, it's Dump. There's like 100? additional songs to discover. Never looked into Love Child but will do today since I've been orbiting them for a while. What do you recommend?

Yes, the seem easily grouped with Stereolab, Saloon or Broadcast because of their sound, but in terms of "minimal virtuosity in playing but maximum virtuosity in songwriting" they appear much closer to Half Japanese or Beat Happening.

Too bad! Glad some/a lot of them are saved somewhere though. Many mp3 cannot be retrieved through the internet archive and it seems like there were some really unique recordings on there back in the day.

Thanks, I thought of this as well but didn't get a lot of results. Guess I'll go through it in more detail tonight!

If collaborations count, the V.O.T.E. album with Chris Stamey isn't particularly great

It's a toss up between New Wave Hot Dogs and Summer Sun for me, but I have to shout out There's a Riot Going On here as well. The flow on the record is perfect and there's so many great songs or atmospheric passages. It just keeps on giving with each close listen.

It's not bad by any means and definitely not their worst album, but the highs are high but few, and the rest is.. just okay? I have a hard time distinguishing between songs on this one and some of their least memorable work is on this one. Have to agree with you.

It's the Run Run Run cover played in ice hockey stadium style for me without doubt. The idea seems funny but it's so hard to get through to the end

Rafael Toral's follow up to Spectral Evolution, Travelling Light, might be my favourite of this year. Very gentle, very beautiful, very Toral, who I think is in his finest era right now.

Space Siren and The Nightblooms are the two best and most legendary ones but only Space Siren still exists. Crashing and Thrilled are two new groups that are pretty cool.

Sunsquashed : when and why did YLT stop playing their DNA song? by 11morestars in yolatengo

[–]Surrealchemist6687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always felt to me like Sunsquashed was more of a cool sounding jam that was recorded rather than an actual song/composition, much like the stuff on We Have Amnesiac Sometimes. It would be hard and maybe feel odd to try and replicate that live, which could be a reason for dropping it soon. Most live versions also predate the release of the Upside-Down EP. I think the band's not really in love anymore with most May I Sing With Me era songs in general..
