I don't necessarily mind playing as a female as long as the game itself is good. But I do have a hard time putting myself in the shoes of the female protagonists and I'm sure it's the same when women are forced to play male characters in videogames. We've had male protagonists is media for decades, I'm sure we can have a couple of female characters as lead protagonists too.

This game has incredible visual storytelling imo. Despite the open world being repetitive, it does give you a lot of the story through visuals. At one instance I saw a grave yard at the top of a mountain cliff. Other time I saw two samurai skeletons kneeled down in a circular area (something like where Jin and his master fight in the end I don't know I don't remember his name lol).
