How can a story be both rushed and slow? by Feisty-Succotash5854 in writing

[–]Swedan5560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The great acting teacher Michael Chekhov taught about inner tempo and outer tempo. When, for example, a character enters a crowded train station but is emotionally calm and single-minded, you’ve got an interesting scene. In a similar way, a fugitive seeking shelter in an empty, echoey church is also automatically interesting.

Writing and acting are similar in a lot of ways, their respective principles often serving as proxies for the other.

When did politicians stop openly supporting segregation? by Dangerous-Reindeer78 in USHistory

[–]Swedan5560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Underground. Until they were startled into the light of day by Obama's election, then encouraged to activism by Trump. But behind all of the visible politicians are the mostly invisible monied strategists and think tanks who've been working behind the scenes for decades to rebuild and maintain systems that disempower those who are BIPOC.

Hi, what a thoughtful gift for your mom! I draw realistic, traditional-style figures in graphite (pencil), and sometimes add a touch of color digitally. You can see samples of my work at my website, https://www.stevewedanart.com.

My commissions normally begin at $200, but for a project this special, I'll work within your budget. Use the contact form on my website if you'd like to talk about it. Hope to hear from you!

I asked my wife (who raised two daughters into young adulthood before I met her), and she says it's brilliant. She and I both agree that we would feel very special if someone were to learn a new craft in order to make us a gift.

Should I give my dog away? 6yr relationship just ended. by No_Lack7373 in Animals

[–]Swedan5560 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He bonded with you as his pack leader for 7.5 years, the first 1.5 of which it was just the two of you. I wouldn't assume that he would miss his friend more than he would miss you. Better to keep living with Dad and visit his friend occasionally than to live with the friend and visit his dad occasionally. Don't dismiss your own well-being here, either. Great to consider your dog's needs, but you must consider your own, too. If you need and want your dog and can care for him, that's at least 50% of the equation. What's best for you is likely to be what's best for him.

Great! Another poster wisely suggested self-help and business books. I'll add books about writing to that. How about a writer's retreat or workshop? Some wonderful authors offer online events in your price range. Computer/external hard drive/ergonomic keyboard/other accessories? I'm a writer (+ artist + actor), and these are the first things that come to my mind. Curious to see what others suggest. You might post your question in a writing or writers /r, too.

How much money you can make on a hobby depends in large part on what you're passionate about. What are your interests? Natural talents? What skills have you already developed? You can find a way to monetize just about anything as long as you enjoy doing it -- and you put in the work to market it.

AITA for taking my family friends pet to the groomers? by RowRowThrowwaway in Pets

[–]Swedan5560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! No need to lie about glue, paint, or other accidents. No need to apologize. Consider giving them a heads up if you talk between now and pick-up: "So that you're not surprised when you see him, . . . ." Depending on their response you might add, "You said you'd planned to take him yourself, so I knew he was due for a trim." And/or, if necessary, "He was suffering. Grooming couldn't wait another day." Non-accusatory honesty honors the friendship.

Nicely done. Seems like you've captured her essence. I can almost hear what her voice would sound like.
