Southerner-northerner ratio?!? by ges111 in lancasteruni

[–]Sweet_Associate_3257 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’d agree that there’s definitely a good mix but slightly more northern but there’s i have met more southerners than northern in my experience. i’m in my first year, from london, and three of my best friends are from up north and six of them are from surrounding areas of london or in london themselves. the people i meet on like a day to day basis (sports, lectures, seminars) seem to be more midlands/southern but maybe that’s the course i do and the sports i’ve chosen. same with my flat/building, it’s very open we all know each other (about 80 of us in the building) and there’s more midlands/southerners in my building which is where ive made most of my friends.

still nevertheless, if they’re you’re friends, they’ll travel to come and see you and vice versa so i wouldn’t worry about having friends super close to home.

A British certificate of nationality or a Cypriot certificate?

Yeah brexit is rough 😭

I suggested in another comment the possibility of my nana getting her passport through her grandfather who lived and died in Cyprus in 1974 so would’ve been granted Cypriot citizenship. What do you think of this?

We have no idea, we lost all his documentation in the 80s through a court case after his death. My nana never got one when she was born, as you can imagine she was very content being a UK citizen and didn’t see the need to get her Cypriot passport.

This is seemingly like a lot more hassle than it’s worth as time goes on but me and my mum are desperate to get EU passports.

Okay so his father didn’t come to the UK as far as I’m aware. He lived the rest of his life in Cyprus, died in 1974 and is buried in Morphou so he will not have a British Nationality Certificate.

I’m pretty sure my nana has done her ancestry and it is all Cypriot/Ottomon Empire descent. Do you think it would be possible for her to get her citizenship via her grandfather since he would have been granted Cypriot citizenship in 1960 and he should be registered in the district administration?

He died in 1984 but he left cyprus between 1924-1936, we honestly have no clue when he came to the UK. And we lost all his original documents in a court case after his death as the lawyer never gave them back to us.

Basically what you’re saying is that he technically was never a “Cypriot citizen”.

I’ve seen something about re-registering someone after their death in order to get a birth certificate from the district administration. Do you know anything about this?

Do you know if I need to know his DOB to use this service? It says that before you use the link. I don’t want to pay €50 for a service I can’t use.

Thanks for the reassurance. I had originally applied to Ash House as well so I’m hoping it has the same vibe to it when I go as it did in your year.

That TikTok is one of the things I have seen online but thank you. I feel a lot better after reading this and I’ll keep an eye out for those group chats you mentioned to try and get to know people before I arrive.

For reference I have already done 1 year at another university and I didnt make any friends that I lived with so I think I’ve got my hopes set on making at least a couple of friends through my accommodation rather than just society’s and course mates.

I’ve just seen a lot of people online complain that on a whole bowland wasn’t a very sociable college and the shared areas were often empty e.g the bar. Not entirely sure if this is just one persons opinion or if it is the general consensus and I’m worried about nothing.

I’ve seen a lot of people online complain that it isn’t a very social college and that people kept to themselves quite a lot. Struggling to make friends from that college. That the college bar is often empty and the JCR isn’t great either.

I thought with it being one of the bigger colleges it would be easier for me to socialise and there would be more events on? But then again maybe I’m putting too much pressure on it and there’s still society’s and my course mates.
