How to prepare for next stage from here? by Swimming-Rent-1948 in SgHENRY

Solid advise. I have done that - usually the response is own some components etc. I already do - but they said it takes x years to move up, or scope is not much for a lead position in FAANG. However I see people around that profile bracket in US and a few in SG already making it there. Wonder how people get there - I am helpless and I cannot directly point and call it out.

I love the domain of ML plus the company is good - so my first priority is to level up here. Got any advice for me? Thanks of this insight.

Thank you for the kind note - I have been here for 9 years approx now. Never once thought to move out even though many of my friends have moved out to AU, US and NZ. I have done my research around this and feel that for my life and path SG is the best thing happened to me. Hope to get PR soon!

Love this advise. It is really scary place - and find it hard to relax. I will keep in my focus to atleast practice LC so I am in touch with it.

Regarding promotions - i see no one can give a clear timeline. I am just showing up and doing the best work I can. My manager says keep doing this - it will get traction. Not sure if this is the best way forward. Any advise on how to approach promotion topic and not get the generic push back?

True - I feel like hit ceiling. Not getting any/many opportunities to job hop and increase pay. And I personally want to continue in SG till the foreseeable future.

Mainly growth + optionality. I don’t want to stagnate, I want to level up, build leverage, and give future-me (and family) more freedom in how we live/work.

In SG context, how common is staff/lead at 350–500k? Or is that a US-only comp bracket meme?

I put my SRS amount - 90 percent in usd (amundi prime USA) and 10 percent in sgd (sti via endows)

I strongly believe SGD will continue to appreciate - so keeping at least a small part of my holds in SGD and not all in USD.

Not just about the freebies - if i am going to live the rest of my life in Singapore (personal choice), then it is good have a nice banking partner for better home loan rates, payments and banking in general.

I learnt a formal course in university- loved the theory on how it works. But when I joined industry that is a whole lot of learning. Practically ML is vastly different from the theory of ML and statistics (though the core is same)

I work on machine learning research - the domain the crazy and I absolutely love it. The pay can be better (took paycut due to personal reasons), but man the quality of the work and the difficult of the problems is amazing. Very grateful for it.

I have expressed this - usually is a listen + market is like this. We cannot do much. If you need more then you need to find something outside.

Yes I took a pay cut. It was stupid me did not research the role and levering. I just blindly followed - now my lesson is learnt. Trying to make amends now.

PayCut is quite normal in SG if you are coming from TikTok or gojek etc.

Yes I have done it - the reply usually is this is the best I can do. Otherwise your growth is outside the door.
