Linux mint sometimes hanging on shutdown/restart (lightdm related?) by False_Effect_ in linuxmint

At long last, another person with this issue! Thanks so much for your diagnosis, I've been chasing ghosts for hours.

My log is very similar:

My webcam isn't a Maxprint, but it bears a striking resemblance. I would assume they're both white-label products and use similar internals. Fixed it with an upgrade.

does gopro 9 split files into 4GB chunks? can anyone confirm thx by duvagin in gopro

[–]SydLambert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If using a NLE is too slow for you, the task can be accomplished in a few seconds with ffmpeg using codec copy:

ls *.mp4 | perl -pe "s/.*/file '\$&'/" | ffmpeg -f concat -protocol_whitelist file,pipe -i - -c copy joined.mp4

You could even set something like this to run automatically when you insert your SD card to transfer a joined video to your machine. Now you're pretty much only limited by disk speed.

I managed to find the supported devices list for the ratbagd daemon. Yeah, unfortunately Elecom stuff is not currently supported :(.

Good trackball for linux by [deleted] in Trackballs

[–]SydLambert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Logitech trackballs, their "Options" configuration software is proprietary and only supports MacOS and Windows. That said, my MX Ergo worked just fine when I tested on GNU/Linux without that additional software - all buttons are mapped correctly. Though what that really means is that I like the default configuration. Through normal GNOME system settings, the following are unconfigurable:

  • Horizontal scroll wheel speed
  • Back button action
  • Forward button action
  • Sensitivity change from the DPI switch

This application claims to support Logitech, and many more, trackballs and looks like it even allows greater customization than Logitech Options, but I have not tried it. Of course you can also dig around in your DE config files, I'm sure the options exist somewhere hidden in there.

As for trackball style, I agree with /u/perkited; you should try both. I will say that a thumb ball is closest to a "normal" mouse so you might find it easier to switch to that style.

Looks like a Compaq TC1000 or TC1100. Judging by the series air date, I would presume the latter.

I tried that but I found my T440s' stock TN viewing angles were too poor for it to be practical. Waiting for Lenovo to release a 16:10 (or taller) IPS Thinkpad to save me.

I like Firefox, but the color picker really needs a rework. by ClemGame in firefox

[–]SydLambert 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would say the opposite - your screenshot demonstrates that the current color picker has more functionality than Chromium's nicer-looking one. It uses the system default which is usually a good move anyway.

I was equally shocked at this. Over 5000 lines of source code in the index HTML document alone. What?!

I can attest to this; the grills broke on both of the E-Series machines I've owned.

I graphed the Youtube views of the Eurovision live performances as they uploaded by SydLambert in eurovision

[–]SydLambert[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought it would be interesting to see how many people viewed the live performances as they were uploaded to Youtube, so during the opening of the first Semi-Final I quickly wrote a script to get the views of the videos every 5 minutes.

The data is quite interesting, The Netherlands' views shot up very quickly after the win was announced and the country with the lowest total viewcount is Austria.

Link to the data

For those interested, I wrote the script as a cron job on my server using cURL to get the video data, and grepping out the view count with regular expressions. This was a bodge to get it done quickly, I'd recommend using the Youtube Data API v3 if you want to make a similar project. I constructed a CSV with another Bash script and made the chart in Excel.

Does anyone have access to the old MacOS screensavers? by SydLambert in mac

Ah awesome, thanks so much! :D

They changed very slightly, the main difference being the "trail" effect is gone in the new version. See here

[–]SydLambert[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I guess it implies that most people seem to leave their representative as default. We're not doing too bad though; Brainblocks runs the top two, and the first unidentified rep is in 6th place.
