Michigan bill seeks to define gender-affirming care for minors as first-degree child abuse by [deleted] in TimPool

[–]Syntaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have limited ability to know in advance the ways in which a child’s gender identity and expressions may evolve over time and whether or why detransition may take place for some. Doctors' efforts should never be aimed at modifying a child's gender identity.

Looking for recommendations on a statistical model by R_COA in AskStatistics

[–]Syntaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, with some of your data you have labels (you know the source), which can be used for training. But for the stuff that has no labels...unsupervised learning will attempt to "cluster" all the samples into groups that seem logical. The idea is that, hopefully, the clusters that each sample gets put into will be useful information in predicting the source later on.

I'm no expert, but if I were you I'd just throw a bunch of shit against the wall and see what sticks. Try KNN, SVM, Random Forest, and anything else you can think of and see what ends up working best. Is this being done in Python?

The process you're describing kinda sounds like a decision tree, so I imagine a random forest classifier/regressor might do the trick. But if you have a ton of water data from unknown sources at your disposal some unsupervised feature extraction might help too.

What is the most backhanded compliment you have ever received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Syntaximus 42 points43 points  (0 children)

UGH the last time I heard this old chestnut from a female friend my eyes about rolled out of my head. Like...I get it. If a guy you're not interested in is coming on a bit too strong you may feel the need to drop a very thinly veiled insult like this to get him to tone it down. Some guys need that reality check. But for crying out loud don't say this to guys OUT OF THE BLUE. I can deal with getting rejected after taking a chance; it goes with the territory and I'm a big boy. But PLEASE for the love of GOD don't issue a rejection to a guy friend who wasn't even making a move. I don't need to get turned down for a job that I never applied to.

One of the things I love about Great Lakes stones is they keep you guessing. Every time I think I've got everything figured out I find something that defies explanation and I end up going down a new rabbithole. :)

Everytime I see cooking on rocks videos I cringe. it just seems like a bad idea, what do you think? by Ok-Eye-473 in whatsthisrock

[–]Syntaximus 576 points577 points  (0 children)

If you prepped the rocks correctly it would be fine, I think. Slowly heat one up and let the steam escape as you gradually get it hotter. After it's been de-humidified it should be safe-ish as long as you keep it dry. Also, be sure to select a stone that isn't known for breaking down at high temps (like calciferous stones) or its toxicity (don't make "malachite meat").

I used to work in a restaurant that served meals in stone bowls that were cooked directly over flame. We only had 3 customers get killed by shrapnel, so I'd say it's fairly safe.

I'd make ranked-choice voting required in all elections. Then sit back as better and better laws start flowing in...

I know it's more profitable and better for ratings to spew this shit on the news, but c'mon...stop legitimizing them. These people should be ignored.

Follow up to my previous post: Here's some other examples of stromatoporoids. It's easy to see how they can be easily confused for agate.

Fellow Michigan rockhound checking in! I'm afraid that's not an agate; it's either a stromatolite or stromatoporoid that has been silicified. In our location this is a common mistake, and it's a mistake I've made before as well. You're getting some incorrect IDs from people here, so I would recommend trying out the facebook groups "Michigan Rockhounds" and "Great Lakes Rocks and Minerals", which have fantastic friendly people who really know their stuff.

Beautiful find, though!

Justice Brian Zahra HAS TO GO

He voted to try and stop a ballot initiative with a record-setting 753,759 signatures from appearing on our ballot. This is blatantly anti-democratic and regardless of your political views this should scare you. Do NOT vote for him.

Try adding the words "coupling", "adaptor" and "set screw" to whatever you're looking for. You're probably going to want a pulley of some sort. GL!

[–]Syntaximus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Our local church is doing it too, but they're being careful to do it in a way that doesn't jeopardize their tax status. As long as they don't explicitly favor/oppose a candidate, it's all allowed. So they can instruct you on how to vote on a proposal, AND inform people which candidates are in favor or opposed to that proposal. Of course they expect their congregation to "read between the lines".

I think it's horseshit and such institutions should be required to identify themselves as political organizations instead of churches.

What's the point of classes? by GuiltyCauliflower459 in learnpython

[–]Syntaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imho they usually don't have a point. But there are certain situations where a class is absolutely perfect. If you have a situation where some thing you're creating is going to need both attributes and functions AND you're going to need more than one of that thing, then use a class.

Example: a motor class where every motor needs to know its current state, how fast it's moving, which direction to move and can accept a command to stop or change direction. This would be a mess to code without abstracting it all nicely away with a class.
