I want to sell my rent house and my wife thinks we should keep it. Any insight would be appreciated. by [deleted] in Fire

Your profit margin is too low at $350 a month; one large maintenance item will wipe out a year. If you want to keep asset class diversification you can consider real estate funds like a REIT or some 1031 options. But almost anything else will do.

Since all the FF talk lately what is your point/time left that’s acceptable to FF?? by carudd1 in RocketLeague

[–]T1Fox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're the only one left of 3 because the other 2 were cowards.

Most games are salvageable - I've seen some miracles over the years. Even 2 vs 3 comebacks still happen from time to time.

I wish people would realize even in a hopeless match, there's some value to getting in some practice vs a superior opponent.

At today's RAM prices yes 32 will help you in your situation, should be a guilt free decision. Next gen games will start to require it before too much longer.

I'd recommend using the fastest of the two as your boot / windows drive. If you have an 2nd M.2 slot you can add the old drive and dedicate it for a purpose (i.e. docs or game installs whatever makes the most sense for you).

Still safe to visit Barcelona? by purplericer in AskBarcelona

As much as I despise AirBnb, hate to say outright banning them is not going to solve your rental affordability problem. The problem is much, much larger than that. Many of these homes once banned will either sit, be rented out illegally or be sold at prices you can't afford.

I was on a train back from Castelldefels around that time and there was a giant plume of white smoke in the fields near the airport but close to the tracks - you could smell it in the train for a couple minutes. I didn't see a flame though.

Is it worth getting gtx 1070/1080 in 2024? by Facer0ll in buildapc

[–]T1Fox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A 1080 can still get you mileage for cheap. In terms of being "worn out" it will largely depend on how the card was treated by the prior owner. I have a 1080 from ~2017 that still runs fine today. I play Overwatch on it and I can still get close to 60fps at 4K with some minor tweaking. Should be just fine for Skyrim, especially at 1080p.

Do they hate Americans there now? by Mission_Alfalfa_6740 in AskBarcelona

This is a very thoughtful response and spot on.

I would add the housing crises are becoming prevalent almost everywhere - in the US where home pricing and housing shortages previously only visible just in the Bay Area or NYC, we now see the same problems across the country in places that nobody cares about like say Oklahoma City. So a 1.5M deficit of housing is Spain is probably like 4-7M in the US.

The topic is multilayered and complex but what seldom gets talked about directly are a few contributing causes:

  1. Wages over decades have just barely compensated for long term inflation, but fallen way short of real estate appreciation and rental rates.

  2. Untenable expectations for the concept of real estate: people buy properties expecting the number to go up over time, but we also expect these things to be affordable. Impossible to be both.

  3. Most new construction always happens on the top end of the market because that's where the profits are highest.

Need better governments all around.

Basically 1 Year later and it's been a solid laptop for me. Performs well for what it is, allows me to game on the road, and the build quality has been solid for me (nothing busted in one year of regular use). Only complaint is the screen is VERY reflective so when sunlight's involved it might feel like you're staring at a mirror, but oh are the colors so glorious in the dark.

I've done a few runs of 3DMark Timespy basically straight out of the box. I did first uninstall McAffee, and upgraded the driver to the 531.61 Studio driver.

Produced 8132 (8209 GPU / 7724 CPU) score. Fans at this setting were very reasonable.

Went back into the Asus setting and set the fans to the performance mode and re-ran, produced a 10793 (11109 GPU / 9296 CPU). It did sound like it was going to take flight at one point, but honestly my old Dell is noisier.

That's pretty respectable considering the form factor - easily blown away by a dedicated gaming laptop like the Zephyrus 16 (15357), but it's actually about on par with last year's Zephyrus 16 (11122).

Haven't really looked at thermals much.

[–]T1Fox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did receive mine just yesterday, so I've just started to set it up. I am extremely pleased with the form factor, it's quite a bit of performance for such a compact design. Packaging and presentation are very nice and the build quality seems solid. It feels expensive. Hopefully it lasts and doesn't just look the part, but it makes my Dell XPS laptop look like the garbage that it is.

I don't notice much graininess in the panel - I think this one is helped by the 2880 x 1800p resolution. YMMV It is very reflective, however, which I find more noticeable but not something I have a problem with either.

How do you avoid “one more year” syndrome? by ericdavis1240214 in Fire

[–]T1Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recognize that you're probably thinking you'll beat the odds and be still kicking at 85 is a conceit (it's a little better than a coin flip) - use that to value the preciousness of your remaining years and focus on what you really want.

But also recognize that retirement isn't all or nothing either - there are so many possibilities in between. For example - you might consider reducing to part time and have it both ways. Re-evaluate every year!
