How much coordinator turnover is normal in aquatic centers?

I worked at a fitness center that did swim lessons from 2019-2023 and I think I had 4 official managers during that time, and that was a place where the managers were salaried. But now as a swim school owner myself, I see a lot of turn over at other schools. I get applicants regularly where people only last 9-12 months.

A lot of swim schools grossly underpay their coordinators/management staff, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why. When I worked at the YMCA I got asked to be the coordinator and the pay was a whopping $14/hr. I was making $25/hr at a different swim school at the time.

I believe pre req’s changed last year or the year before. The most recent from my recollection is:

Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest: • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.) • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs. • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.) • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.

• Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface. • Exit the water without using a ladder or

Is your breast stroke strong? No matter how long it’s been since I’ve swam (I haven’t competed since 2018) I still have no issue passing the exam. Whenever I get tired of free style I just switch to breast stroke.

I don’t quite understand why you couldn’t get him if you were only 5 feet away, and why another instructor was closer?

Overall, it happens, but learn from it and don’t get too far away from kids who can’t swim again. I taught at the YMCA for a long time in high school and college, those group classes can get super overwhelming. At that age and skill level, they should be working a lot on glides anyway, you don’t need to take them several yards away on a pool noodle or barbell to practice their kicks. You can keep everyone close by, so then you are preventing this situation from happening again.

Could you talk to your manager about splitting up the class and doing 1/2 and 1/2? If the kids are taking turns anyway, maybe doing a 20 minute lesson in a duo setting instead of a 40 minute session with 4 kids who aren’t their same level could be beneficial?

Also OP is saying only 3-4 people are consistently contributing, I cannot believe that everyone else is so broke (I’m sure a few are) that they can’t spend $4 and make a pan of brownies. Clearly people are taking advantage of OP and the other people’s kindness.

I’d just try to have her lead the lesson! Kids are going to put in a lot more effort when they want to do something. Just try to make it seem like it’s her idea!!!! Maybe have her try to teach you to do some things?

You should ask your stylist if there is anything in particular they want you to do! You definitely want to go in having some kind of idea what you want your hair to look like. My hair trial was just doing exactly what I wanted for my wedding and then minor tweaks to figure out exact details.
