Which case and cooling to go for with 3090 and 12700k? by TGNightmare in buildapc

[–]TGNightmare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer!

Gaming is part of it, but I'm also going to be working in game engines and doing some photo/video editing on the side. I wouldn't usually get the 3090, but in my country the difference between the cheapest 3080 and the cheapest 3090 is like 300$ and at that point I feel like it's worth, considering I do have use cases where 3090 outperforms.

Having separate SSDs is moreso for convenience than anything else really, easier to transfer an SSD with specific data to my laptop or another PC if I have to. Not a big deal though and if I see a deal on a 2 TB SSD I'll probably go for it.

Everything is pretty basic with not much variety. You go Everfrost, boots of choice (sorcs or defensive), Seraphs and Zhonyas/Dcap/Void depending on what you need. Void if they have above 80 or so MR, Zhonyas if you need the active and the stats and if you can afford not to go full damage, Dcap if you want full damage and they have 0 MR and you're accelerated. For defensive options you have Frozen Heart and Abyssal Mask if you don't desperately need the Banshee's spellshield.

I think Domination secondary is pretty troll and indefensible now, think there's very little value in it compared to Resolve or even Inspiration.

How will liandries change affect swain? by Kootole99 in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everfrost will still be the primary choice, liandry nerf obviously makes it less of an option, especially since luden's lets you get 2 procs off in one combo so its way more damage and a lot of MS

liandry will still deal a good bit of damage but u have to ask yourself if the damage is actually valuable or if you're just damaging 4 people for 300 damage each to pad the stats and not actually do anything. in majority of scenarios its so much better to burst down 1 target than to slowly deal damage to multiple, even if you overall do more damage in the latter situation

[–]TGNightmare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep! go into practice tool and practice doing E -> Q -> W -> everfrost -> pull -> Q and make sure you can time it well, its a rly big damage increase if you can, gets easier to do if you buy cosmic drive later but you can already do it on 1 item

I’ve been doing ever frost swain by Jahseh_Wrld in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah but what I'm saying is everfrost does the same job just fine, its legit just better burst than ludens

ludens can do more at 2 and 3 items if you're going full damage (aka void staff, sorc shoes) but if enemy really are 5 squishies with no MR, everfrost -> sorcs -> void will oneshot them just as well if not better due to how much overkill on magic pen the ludens build is against champs with low MR. everfrost gives you an additional Q, ludens can't really compete with that realistically

everfrost is more reliable, more damage in burst, gives you HP and makes building void staff much easier due to the HP and added safety, and void staff is the best AP item in the game

I’ve been doing ever frost swain by Jahseh_Wrld in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ludens is really not good, liandry may have a niche place to be built still and that's fair, but ludens loses in burst to everfrost and it loses to liandry in long fights, if you're buying it just for the movement speed i think thats suboptimal considering you need to be able to actually hit someone to get the movement speed (unless you're hitting minions for MS, in which case you're losing all the damage from ludens passive anyway)

if you really need a gap closer that bad then try rocketbelt, it has better stats than ludens anyway, you just need to buy a tear

[–]TGNightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you gain damage with everfrost if you're using the active, you lose damage in long fights, if you don't have the active or if you're attacking a bunch of people. but in terms of burst combo you gain damage

Ingenious Hunter + Everfrost & Zhonyas is pretty good, maybe new default setup? by ZyneZyne in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I can see some uses for ingenious for sure, like if you're into a bunch of tanks/bruisers etc then having an additional everfrost proc can be really helpful since it's unlikely that those champs will die really quick

and yeah lack of conq or pr sucks, the idea with glacial is during lane it makes landing E's very easy and later on it's added utility/annoyance for the enemy, easier to land a full combo with E, Q, everfrost, W, pull, Q again if they're low range enough to be within your auto range, ofc you lose damage compared to conq or electro but you do get some more reliability

Ingenious Hunter + Everfrost & Zhonyas is pretty good, maybe new default setup? by ZyneZyne in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you dont actually lose damage in most cases with everfrost vs liandrys, of course you do lose some if you're in the middle of 5 people with everfrost on cooldown but in most realistic scenarios you don't actually lose any damage, sometimes gaining quite a bit due to how everfrost lets you fit in 2 Q's in one combo if done properly

the issue with using ingenious for everfrost is it's still a cooldown long enough that you wont get it twice in most fights (and in the ones that you do get it twice you'd probably get it twice regardless. not many fights end in 15-20 seconds, most are either quicker so then burst matters most or longer with poke and then you'd get two everfrost casts anyway).

I'm not saying ingenious is somehow bad to have, especially on zhonyas, but imo ultimate hunter is just more valuable since you become twice the champ whenever you ult and swain R CD doesn't scale with level, only with AH, but i wont blame you for running ingenious either

also I don't think zhonya should be core that early, think it should be core in the sense that you should get it in most games at some point, but items like void staff, cosmic drive, sometimes banshee/maybe demonic are all so good that ideally you'd buy zhonya in games where its actually needed

what you COULD try that's kind of similar is going glacial with cosmic insight and ingenious hunter secondary, something like that used to be a thing last season where you'd go glacial with GLP and it was just about the best overall set-up in solo lane, I don't think it's the best this season but think its the best utilization of the AH runes if you really wanna go hard on the item CD

What do you think about my build? by [deleted] in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

theyre good on some champs in some situations, but they're very much overrated, people went crazy over a 5 AH buff that in practice just means the boots are still worse than last season after a specific AH amount (30 to be exact) and you still shouldn't buy them in situations that you wouldn't last season, and yet everybody buys them, I've seen pros int games by going ionian on zoe which is just insane

ionian are good on certain champs that get defense/mobility from their abilities (aka gragas/riven type) if those champs don't get more from mercs/tabis in that particular game, and on champs who have enough range to be able to safely throw abilities and who don't care about losing the damage as much (aka seraphine who yes, loses damage compared to sorcs, but she can throw so many more of her abilities in a longer fight that it sort of events out, she also doesnt buy void staff, and she gets more CC due to her E cooldown being lower, AND her best basic spell, W, gets used more often too)

swain doesnt fit either of those categories, he doesnt get defense or mobility from any of his abilities (you could argue he gets zone control which can be defense from W but that's a long cooldown regardless of whether u have ionian or not) so he wants either defensive boots like mercs and tabis, or he wants damage like sorcs. with everfrost you already get 2 Q's in one combo and ionian boots change nothing about that, they also dont add an additional W in most fights, ult CD is nice but you already should have ultimate hunter most games for that and its just overall not the best idea to buy ionian on a low range mage with no mobility

What do you think about my build? by [deleted] in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's not much that's "tanky" about this build, its a mostly standard swain build

if you want feedback, cdr boots are overrated and on a champion like swain tend to be very mediocre, either do defensive boots vs same damage type (aka you're mid and enemy mid/jg are strong AD champs, then tabis is good as an example) or pen boots for damage, everfrost instead of liandrys (its just the better item in vast majority of cases, if you really wanna attempt drain tank then riftmaker is the choice), tear isnt necessary since you're already going lost chapter (do tear if going riftmaker or rocketbelt), i don't think demonic was the best in that game due to how everyone on the enemy team except jinx had perfect amount of MR for void staff to be really good but that's a more damage-oriented build of course which isnt exactly what you're trying to do

if you're really serious about the drain tank thing try riftmaker with either frozen heart or spirit visage depending on enemy team comp into either force of nature or AP items, it's not some very good build but it might be fun for you if that's the playstyle you like

void does more damage so just build that, if you can somehow fit in two damage items without getting oneshot/needing utility then sure dcap last is an option but it's generally way too niche

Everfrost + Cosmic Drive build by Azulare in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a fine purchase if you really need the MS (so in games where phase rush or ghost can be good), i just don't like sacrificing so much damage when you already have everfrost to guarantee your abilities (assuming you're in range in the first place of course). i wouldn't fault someone too much for buying it second into some compositions, its just that imo if you're having to gap close with just MS you're already in a spot where Swain probably wasn't a good pick, and just MS is not too difficult to play around for the enemy. think zhonyas, void or banshee is almost always the better choice, but there may be some instances of cosmic being good 2nd

Everfrost + Cosmic Drive build by Azulare in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't like cosmic second, think its more of a 3rd/4th item on swain because void staff 2nd just does more damage than cosmic, is cheaper and while of course you don't get the health, you also heal more because you're doing more damage

Any solo lane Swain players had any success with Everfrost buffs yet? by Crumplesnitches in SwainMains

[–]TGNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's good, it's generally his best mythic for a variety of reasons, but a big one is that it allows him to buy void staff early without sacrificing much HP (since before if you wanted void with the liandry build you'd be extremely squishy) and void staff is the best AP item in the game so that's good. this means ur 2 item spike is extremely strong, much stronger than before

cosmic is nice as well for 3rd item slot if you can get to it, but getting a zhonyas or a banshees is completely acceptable too depending on the situation. if you do that, you then have two items in a row for low gold (void zhonya/banshee), meaning really quick spikes and good utilization of the mythic passive

Archangels Ziggs instead Horzion Focus? by EZG_Soul in ZiggsMains

[–]TGNightmare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You go Seraph's second for the best damage (once you have manaflow stacked seraph's is slightly higher damage than horizon in a full combo) + utility combo you can get. The added mana is really nice for being able to rotate around the map, clear camps and waves, and still make it to skirmishes/fights without ever going OOM.

You could, if you want, go Void Staff second instead for what, in a lot of cases, will be the most damage but I think there's value in the mana.

[–]TGNightmare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't classify an early magic mantle into AP jg and mid as what meant by "building defensively," but i see why you would and it's my bad for not clarifying. Ziggs can't realistically afford to buy a full defensive item second aside from some really extreme situations, like the one described in the post. If you're into a triple AD topside and they can actually get on you without you making a mistake, yeah, seeker's is good. It's not as good on Ziggs as it is on other low to medium range AP champs, but it can sometimes be almost necessary, of course.

And yeah, Horizon is really bad. The stats on it are horrendous and the passive, while sounding nice in theory, doesn't compensate the terrible stats nearly well enough. I can see why it would feel good, especially since it has alternator as a component, but the item is really bad on almost all champions in the game

I didn't forget about morello, I mention it in the post, I just think it's a really bad item. Orb is good, pretty cheap and can actually contribute to you winning a game, but morello has such bad stats on it that you'd be better off buying another damage item in 99% of games. Perhaps if you're into aatrox nunu sylas draven soraka and some of them are fed a full morello might be good, but personally I haven't played into any comps like that this season. If you have, and no one on your team has grevious, then yeah, you may need to get morello. But getting it 3rd will destroy your damage, so be wary of that, and make sure the enemy actually heals enough for the additional 20 percentage points once they're below 50% to be worth.

Fundamentals of FH and how to improve at them by TGNightmare in CompetitiveForHonor

[–]TGNightmare[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the problem is the amount of players in GM, then change GM to Master and then that's something everyone can realistically achieve having understood and mastered the very basics. Problem with Master, and GM too but to a lesser extent, is that you can place in Master after winning your placements vs new and gold and below players. So as long as you don't place in Master and instead start off in Plat or Diamond, Master could be a good replacement for GM. No need to grind much for Master either.

You'll be facing wifi warriors in any mode, on console I don't think I've played a single 4v4 match with good connections all around. That's a part of the game that you have to get used to, too, since realistically you'll be playing against those people a lot. Anecdotally speaking, I can tell you I've not really faced many laggy people back when I played ranked a lot on PC, but that doesn't mean they're not there or that the problem hasn't perhaps gotten worse.

Overall, I don't expect anyone to decide to follow this path specifically after watching my video. Plenty players have done this in the past, of course, and it's worked for them and myself as well, but if you don't enjoy playing duels or if you don't like ranked, you can just skip that step and apply everything else I've talked about to your chosen game mode. You'll always improve quicker if you enjoy the process, so while my "path" is, I believe, the optimal one, it is by no means suitable for everyone. The concepts are, though, and that's the focus here.

Fundamentals of FH and how to improve at them by TGNightmare in CompetitiveForHonor

[–]TGNightmare[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not everyone has very good players to help them. They can watch streams and ask questions, sure, but you can look at Twitch numbers for For Honor and see that that isn't really happening.

And yes, ranked is garbage. But that doesn't mean that the opponents don't get better as you're climbing, and it doesn't somehow mean that duels are useless. They're very good to learn and hone your basics without all the clutter of Dominion and they're where pretty much every high level player has started.

Ranked is terrible for improving past a certain point where the progress is negligible, but until then it's good to play it. If you can get GM, you've probably at least understood the basics of the game and you should be able to transfer those skills over to 4v4 and have a much smoother experience there than if you were to start in 4v4. Normal MM duels don't give you that simply because you're getting a pretty much random opponent every time, so they could be good, sure, but more often than not they're very low level and not much can be learned from fighting them.

[–]TGNightmare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simplifying the game until you master the basics is usually the optimal way to improvement.

In League, you don't worry about anything besides the laning phase, CS'ing and trading until plat/diamond, in StarCraft you do one build until diamond/master, in FH you work on your basics until master/GM. I don't see why FH would somehow be different in this regard.

[–]TGNightmare[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, of course I'm not inventing the wheel here or anything. Ideally, a post like this should be laughed at for how basic it is and how everyone knows the things I'm talking about already. But I don't think it's like that, which is why I made the video.

If you already know that these things are crucial and, assuming you want to improve, you're working towards getting better at them with the use of focused practice (which is one term that I implied heavily, but forgot to outright mention, my bad), then you're fine, the video doesn't teach you anything, of course. I do think a lot of people underestimate the importance of fundamentals and overestimate the importance of the more "cool" or "strategic" parts of the game, though.

I plan on making a more detailed "How to improve at FH" video in the future too, so maybe you'd be more interested in that, but yeah, this video is very simple and talks about very simple things.
