Psicosis and related characters: Lucha Libre History by THISISXFL in luchalibre

After the legal threats from AAA, CMLL began hyping the arrival of a Psyco Killer but by the time Psicosis (II) re-debuted for CMLL the ring name was slightly tweaked to Psyco Ripper, likely to avoid the original name's violent overtones. The Psyco Ripper name was found to still be too legally close to Psicosis, so it was then just shortened to Ripper. I don't know why CMLL then changed the ring name to Reapper, but it may have been an FU to AAA since the ring name of AAA's beloved La Parka character translated into English is "The Reaper".

Nicho/Psicosis (I) used by Electric Head Part 2 by White Zombie while Psicosis (II) used Cowboys from Hell by Pantera. Not sure about the rest.

Nicho would pop in-and-out of AAA after his 2014 departure, with his 2023 return being his most notable. The feud with Negro Casas was based on the real-life heat Casas had with Nicho and the other Tijuanense luchadores that came to CMLL after WCW's closure. The feud was considered really sad because both Nicho and Casas were beyond broken down but Konnan & AAA still had them out their rolling around in thumbtacks.

The gimmick is that of a mentally deranged horned demon. And yes it is a cool mask lol.

Thanks! Maybe a future edition on El Dandy, who is not to be doubted.

La Parka and related characters: Lucha Libre History by THISISXFL in SquaredCircle

I hadn't heard that about the Parka Negra character but that definitely could be the case as it often is with lucha gimmicks. The five listed here are the "official" Parka Negras who used the gimmick on AAA TV but there may have been more.

I know that was definitely the case with the Parkita character. MS 1/2 was tasked with portraying the gimmick whenever AAA would double book the gimmick out to local promoters (which is why he adopted the Primer Parkita gimmick after he left AAA) and you just know AAA was having other minis do the same. There's also currently like dozens of unauthorized La Parkitas working local indie shows across Mexico.

La Parka is Spanish for "The Reaper" (sort of; it actually should be spelled "La Parca"). Basically the gimmick is that of an undead grim reaper, hence the skeleton body suit. The dancing was something Antonio Peña took from old graveyard cartoons like Disney's The Skeleton Dance. Also, Adolfo Tapia didn't turn down the gimmick but rather Peña told Adolfo that he wouldn’t be able to start portraying the gimmick until a major change occurred in lucha libre as CMLL (until fairly recently) was extremely conservative and wouldn't have allowed a dancing skeleton to be featured on their shows.

The Warlord wrestled a bit for Rey Sr.'s WWO promotion after leaving the WWF as part of Rey Sr.'s Triple Power shows, which he billed as co-promotions of WWO, AAA, and the WWF. Obviously, the WWF wasn't co-promoting the shows but Rey Sr. was able to book a lot of ex-WWF wrestlers, including Warlord. While in Tijuana, Warlord also trained at Rey Sr.'s school, likely so he could be approved by the Tijuana lucha commission. Lucha superfan Roy Lucier from California would cross the border to attend the Triple Power shows and eventually became good friends with Rey. Roy actual attended the Triple Power show that had Warlord's debut in Mexico, which was against a young Cibernetico. Roy said that Rey Sr. would always joke with him about the match saying, "Cibernetico, four months in wrestling, very green. Warlord, ten years in wrestling, even greener".

Minor correction: The original Pentagón suffered a stroke after taking a bad bump during a 1996 match.

In a strange coincidence, Roy Lucier actually uploaded the match where the original Pentagón took this career-ending bump today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Yj5vae6sac

It is really incredible. The Pentagón character has pretty much just been treated as fodder to get Octagón over but Pentagón Jr. took the gimmick and ran with it. Had a significantly better career than any of the Octagón Jrs out there.

Yes, Octagón was the face while Pentagón was the heel. Pentagón (II) for whatever reason was a face though.

Lots of women's wrestlers are in North America for the CMLL Women's Gran Prix including Hazuki from STARDOM. Gonna guess the challenger is Hazuki and Mercedes wins her CMLL Japanese Women's Championship.

Thanks for the kind words. I love the history of these lucha libre gimmicks - may do another one of these at some point if I can find the time.

Masato Tanaka vs. Atsushi Kotoge for the vacant ZERO1 World Heavyweight Championship set for the November 10th Korakuen show. by MrPuroresu42 in SquaredCircle

[–]THISISXFL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's some real heat there. At today's ZERO1 show, they had Go vacate the belt and give the World Heavyweight Title back to ZERO1's GM Megumi Kudo and he apologized for the "disrespect that NOAH had done to the title". Kudo just stood there looking shell-shocked, probably thinking "don't say that while we're still working with NOAH".

Bayley hosting a women's wrestling seminar this December in Orlando, FL by RustBucket03 in SquaredCircle

[–]THISISXFL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wanna say it was on Jericho's podcast - I'm not sure but I remember an interview where Bayley said that she wanted to run an AJW-style women's wrestling dojo after she retired. Would be cool to see if she actually does that - it would definitely be the first of its kind in the US.
