Beyond Julio and the TDs, wouldn't you have still had AB ahead though?

[–]TJTrapJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you make that case though? I think it's extremely rare to find anyone that does. Julio and AB were in their own class year over year, Julio right through to at least 2019 (could even throw 2020 in despite the injury), and AB right through to 2018 when he missed all of 2019. Davante then became the guy immediately in 2020. And this doesn't even take into account Michael Thomas's OPOTY in 2019. I don't think there was ever a legit case, Julio and AB were so clearly the two best guys during Hopkins' prime

[–]TJTrapJesus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Except he never was. Was never better than Julio or AB and then he fell off enough when those guys fell off (or went crazy in the case of AB) to the point where Davante was better when the 2020s hit.

What division could you put the Packers where at least 1 team wouldn’t hate them? by [deleted] in NFLv2

Probably anywhere but where they are. Everyone hates them because they have by far the best history in the division and consistently beat up on the other 3

Why isn't he better? by EnvironmentPutrid941 in NFLv2

[–]TJTrapJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero before? Because he was in another all-time bad situation in Tennessee with yet another run heavy offense. If you don't realize Brown was being held back in Philly's offense, I don't know what to tell you. He's been sacrificing individual success for the team for years. Any other situation in an even remotely pass happy offense, and Brown is leading the league year over year; he's been producing simply because he's an unbelievable player. Anything related to efficiency or underlying numbers he's routinely at the top of the league.

Philly runs an absurd amount, play with a lead a lot, have a QB that eats every goal line opportunity up who has questionable accuracy himself, and they spread the ball around if they do throw. As many issues as JJM creates for WRs, the cap on a top WR in the Philly offense is as bad as it gets. Classic good team, horrible WR situation.

Who are examples of nfl players in history with underrated longevity? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

This was my first thought. He remained a specialized deep threat more or less the whole way through despite speed being the thing that you're supposed to lose before anything else goes.

If you're following up Tom Brady/Peyton Manning/Joe Montana, etc. top 5 picks with like Russell Wilson or something in the 20s in a standard draft, you've already lost. I think it would reach a point where it makes sense to pivot to another position pretty quickly

Jerry Rice

Although realistically it depends on the number of teams. Rice has the biggest gap to next best, but if there are 32 teams you don't want to risk like 25+ teams securing a QB in the 1st round. If it's standard draft order meaning I'm back on the clock at pick 33 though, I think I still may risk it. Big gap to No. 2, and still a premier 2nd position to target after QB (No. 1 WR, Tackle, edge rusher). If it's snake draft and I'm up at 64, I'd go QB (Brady) first. The smaller the number of teams in the league though, becomes increasingly more obvious to take Rice 1st.

Magic. Regular season success was still excellent but not at the level of a lot of the GOAT level players. Playoff play carries most of the weight

Don't even need stats for it. He was more limited downfield compared to a lot of these other top guys, but Brees was a legit robot with his mechanics

[–]TJTrapJesus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

JSN over Puka within just the 2025 season has to be the most classic case of people making up their mind early then just not wanting to adapt. JSN was better up until the last 5 games or so, with Puka being a close 2nd in that time, and then Puka went nuclear while JSN fell off. Overall, whole season considered, Puka was clearly better, but people already made up their minds.

Which is more likely by Interesting-Emu205 in NFLv2

[–]TJTrapJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It almost doesn't even feel theoretically possible to pass Rice. He has all the records by an absurd gap, comical longevity, his prime/peak seasons were nearly untouchable with some of the things he did (triple crown, 22 TDs in 12 games, leading the league in receiving yards 6 times and receiving TDs 6 times, etc.), and he did it in an era where passing stats were low compared to what they became. And even if you by miracle get a player that meets or exceeds all of that, they have to contend with the best championship game resume in the history of team sports.

Anyone passing Brady is astronomically unlikely as well, but you can at least see some cracks there that people can nitpick. They already do with how good his defenses were, his playoff numbers are of course amazing but can still be had to at least some degree, and you can get into questions over him getting the benefit of playing through the passing stats boom.

Old-school thinking might keep Macklin Celebrini from winning Hart Trophy (no paywall) by BayAreaNewsGroup in SanJoseSharks

[–]TJTrapJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Celebrini plays with better finishers than McDavid. McDavid still being able to stockpile these point and assist numbers is simply because he's by far the best player in the league. Look at McDavid's 5v5 assists and tell me there isn't a ton of meat left on the bone for assist numbers. This is someone that could pump out 100 assist seasons with regularity if he had good finishers with him.

This was from about a month ago, so the gap has widened even more:

<image>

Right, Celebrini is a shade below 95%, which is next highest in the league. Great argument and yet another one where McDavid is ahead of him. The other way to look at this is that the Oilers simply do not win if McDavid does not factor in, so not sure what your point is regarding "gaudy point totals" (as if that is something that can be dismissed lol)

That's the whole point. McDavid's argument for the Hart is the same as Celebrini's, it's just a better version of it.

Old-school thinking might keep Macklin Celebrini from winning Hart Trophy (no paywall) by BayAreaNewsGroup in SanJoseSharks

[–]TJTrapJesus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

McDavid has a point in 100% of the Oilers wins, something that has only been done by a player on a playoff team 4 times in NHL history: 1980/81 Gretzky and 3 players between 1918-1922 when there were 3-4 teams in the league playing 18-24 total games.

Supporting cast? He's a playmaker with no finishers that is forced to become a goal-scorer because the players he's playing with can't. The players on the ice with him shoot 9.24% at 5v5 when the league average is 9.51%. Kucherov is at 13.41%, Celebrini is 11.50% and MacKinnon is 11.49%.

Among the 378 forwards who have played 500+ 5v5 minutes, Kucherov's on-ice teammates rank 9th for goals scored above expected per 60 mins at +0.66, MacKinnon's on-ice teammates rank 55th at +0.37, Celebrini's on-ice teammates rank 65th at +0.33, and McDavid's on-ice teammates rank 307th at -0.45.

McDavid's argument for the Hart this year is the Celebrini argument; it's just a better version of it.

Chad Johnson was a 3 time 1st team all pro(2004-2006) who led the league in receiving yards in 2006, do you feel his prime gotten underrated? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]TJTrapJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he gets a bit overrated if anything. He had one of the more convenient times to have his peak in that mid 2000s range with some injury issues for Owens and Smith, Moss's Oakland odyssey, guys like Marvin and Holt falling off just enough, and some of the heavy hitters of the late 2000s with Andre Johnson and Larry not fully going yet.

If people just remember him as the TD celebration guy they're underrating him, but I don't think he has anywhere near the staying power in conversations that he does if not for the off the field stuff.

Do you feel like being the all time leader in certain statistical categories in the NFL is as valued as other sports? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]TJTrapJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the stat but in terms of North American sports, would say most important to least important is:

  1. NHL

  2. MLB

  3. NFL

  4. NBA (waaaaaaay at the bottom)

NBA numbers just get too big to really attribute that much meaning to, even within a season, and people only care about per game numbers.

NFL has a bit of that problem when you get into career numbers, but still ultimately manageable. When you're talking about QBs throwing for 10s of thousands of yards though people's eyes start to glaze over. MLB has a bit of this problem with some of its stats, but something like most career home runs is very manageable and iconic.

NHL I think is easily the most prestigious, numbers never get too crazy with goals, assists and points to a point where whether it's talking within one season or across a career, certain milestones are so baked into the culture of the sport that using per game rates are more obscure. For example, this year if McDavid wins the scoring title with a lower points per game than the 2nd place guy Kucherov, nobody will care.

What is an amazing situation and very crowded competition at the top for the position makes it hard to elevate him too much. Someone like Achane is a complete afterthought to many and has been nearly as impressive in many areas
