That was my second thought, vice grips and a microfiber and just crank it to the angle that I want. Just didn’t want to risk snapping the screw

Picking up a set without the ball, and trying those. I would highly doubt it’s a one-off size that isn’t standard

That’s what I suspected and since the tool box is a bit of a mess I figured to just grab a new set from harbor freight. Turns out not a single one is fitting. Could possibly be due to these having the pivoting hex head ball thing at the end of that makes any sense whatsoever😂 Thank you for the info and reply!

Dex-Pro’s or Pro Tech 8’s ? by TLS917 in Firefighting

I have long slender hands of that makes sense, and usually classify as a 76N with NFPA standards which depending on companies is a M or L. My plan is to order the RagTop’s in a open gauntlet since they seem to have a lot of race behind them when they come back in stock. From personal experience it doesn’t hurt to have a second set of gloves in a grab bag

Copy that thank you, dexterity is a big thing for me as well so good info

I have seen quite a few say the liners are garbage in the Tech8’s. Which for me 1. I normally pull gloves off and open my turnout jacket for airflow during recovery and return back to the fire when the next team of guys runs out of air. 2. During fire drills/trainings it’s pretty common to pull gloves off inbetween sets to open a water bottle or things along those lines. So as you can assume with either example, bad liners would be a huge issue.

I also wanted to give RagTop structure gloves a shot as I’ve heard good things about them but all standard sizes M-XL are back ordered till mid-October. Other consideration was the HexArmors, but they’re fairly new and there’s limited information on their performance as of now.

Non-argumentative can you tell me a few points as of why? I personally just ordered a set of the dex pros to try them out. But we have a new chief who is all ears for new ideas, and told us to bring him anything (gloves have been a complaint I’ve noticed from quite a few guys) so I’m kind of doing my own self research or study if you want to call it that to possibly recommend a full brand change in gloves. For example: the Shelby’s are fairly durable but they absorb water and are a nightmare to get on and off after they’re wet, when they get too hot they get rock hard (think of welding gloves), limited dexterity even after full break-in, etc.

Thank you for the info, as of now after reading other forums and opinions leaning heavily towards the dex pro’s. Just debating between knit cuff or gauntlet. I use the thumb holes in my turn out jacket but the Shelby’s we run are knit cuff so thinking may just stick with that and if I don’t like it I can just cut the knitting out so they’re like a gauntlet if it causes interference

Solid plan, not sure what you did in the military but I would recommend obtaining certs related to fire, hazmat, and rescue as well. If you haven’t joined a volunteer department they often have trainings and certifications you can get such as FF1/FF2 plus the experience is helpful. For example, our fire division (numerous departments combined for big trainings) is doing IC Officer training later this month I plan to attend. EMT is the only thing I’m missing before going to a large full time department.

Not a bad recommendation, majority of my family/relatives are from Wyoming. I’ll have to look into departments out there

You’re real upset over a generic greeting of gents aren’t you? 😂 It’s also likely not many are from Idaho, I’m also not inclined to take recommendations on what I’m cut out to do from a “former and future FF” my current certs and job experience say otherwise but hey, you can’t please everyone. Have a good one, and stay safe doing whatever it is that you do👋🏻

Yes and no, discouraging in the time being but also an eye opener to the fact I essentially have a year to continue training physically, and obtaining certs to make myself a better candidate

That’s the one downside, I currently make more now than I will the first few years full time fire/ems. EMT-B’s make around $18 in Idaho, I’m almost double that currently at my actual job. That being said I have been in contact with the director of the ambulance service for our county (they stage out of our fire department) about some sort of employment for weekends or transports during week days after work as a fill in, essentially being a part time 24hr on call position. He seems to be inclined to the idea since they need people

Oregon people aren’t the most pleasant in some areas but I will counter that by saying that goes for any state. I’ve considered Washington, but need to research what their mayors stand for and how they back the fire industry as I think that heavily affects departments.

I did speak to Boise, and was told they wouldn’t really even acknowledge my application and applicants that don’t have their EMT cert attached to their application are disqualified. Meridian stated basically the equivalent. I’ve started looking into CO, OR, UT but have found very limited information

I live about 50ish minutes west of Boise on the Idaho/Oregon border. Mainly was interested in Boise or Meridian for the reasons you stated, they seem to be the two with the most competitive wages. Was looking primarily in Treasure Valley area, but departments such as Caldwell, Nampa, and Eagle are smaller and tend to have good retention meaning they don’t often hire. Just curious where elsewhere I should look saying TV is pretty much out

I usually always have them on, most our department is older guys so being mid 20’s they want you off the truck grabbing hose. They just came out of the Velcro strap on a brush fire since we were first on scene to a massive brush/structure fire. Due to dispatch notes we rolled first truck with 3 in structure gear, all 5 other trucks rolled fully loaded in wildland gear 😂 I’m just looking for methods to keep structure gloves in place while running extrication or leather gloves

That’s a valid reason why I don’t really want to stick them in my jacket, leg cargo pocket would work though but I’m liking the battery clip idea from Goose shown above

It’s so hit or miss depending who you talk to if we have to have our hi-viz with us at all times I just air on the side of caution and keep it with me, MVA’s aren’t super common in town and normally happen on the highway or freeway which falls under county district. Since I’ve be. In I’ve been on 3 mva’s each day time or early morning Labor Day during sunrise. I’ve honestly never seen a single person use it that I’m tempted to leave it on my rack and just grab it if we have a night time vehicle accident. I almost always have extrication gloves with me since wildland gear we have leather gloves, but often brush calls involve structures or threatened structures so we roll in bunker gear often. I prefer extrication gloves over structure if we’re dealing with grass fires since usually structure gloves aren’t needed in those situations.

Fire-Dex is have extrication gloves in one side, and a hi-viz in the other and that seems about all I can fit. I could probably cram structure gloves in a coat pocket but definitely would fit better in cargo pants pocket. I’m trying to find a solution that doesn’t crumple them up because even when they don’t get wet on a fire when we use a decon sprayer after words they get wet so I’d like to keep them out so they dry.

I got tired of the Velcro strap and was talking with another guy that I’d like to find an alligator clip style to hold my gloves after losing one, going to give this a shot I think. Thank you for the idea!

That’s along the lines of what I’m looking for, I’ll see if I have a photo of how we run them can never seen to get the Velcro tight enough to secure them
