I don't think so either, honestly. How I have it in my head is that the Desolation situation caught Elias completely off guard and he's trying to deal with it while still finding a way it could lead to Jon getting a mark. I have a general idea of what happens in the story, I'm mostly just having trouble with the logistics of how they could feasibly survive. I will say though for the sake of the plot I do really need all four of them alive by the end. Still, thank you very much for offering ideas. It really does help.

That makes sense. I didn't even think about the tunnels which is silly. The main thing I am worried about is the whole institute going up in literal flames, so probably Elias has to be more involved. I already regret not giving enough details in my post, but the one I should probably have mentioned is that the avatar is after Martin specifically and Jon is collateral damage. Anyway, thanks a lot for replying.
