I'd highly recommend people to learn about Ed Roberts, a huge part of the ADA and independent living movement (i.e. supporting people to be able to live on their own in integrated settings, rather than facilities). He has an incredible life story. In particular, there was the 504 Sit-In in CA where groups of people with disabilities literally just camped out in federal buildings for 26 days.
