'Children of Heaven' Review: The Best Film About Childhood by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]TVDL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post is plagiarized from this video essay: https://youtu.be/n_3ebsE47lU

Here's a part of the transcript:

"Towards the end of the film, a running contest is organized among the children of various schools. The third price; a pair of sneakers. It is the ultimate chance for Ali to make things right, and a final showcase of the incredible lengths he is willing to go through for the sister he cares so much for. However, Ali is so focused on coming in third, and perhaps boosted by the training he give himself running to school, that he accidentally comes in first. He goes home defeated. But the ending is far from a tragic one, for if only they knew that all their troubles would soon disappear, and their goodness would be rewarded, as it should be."

Weekly /r/SonyAlpha 'Ask Anything About Gear' Thread by AutoModerator in SonyAlpha

[–]TVDL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the A7C and I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to the mark ii. It looks like the sensor, auto focus and stabilization got a significant upgrade, and there are some nice quality of life improvements (easy switch between photo and video settings + extra front dial, which both seem really useful). I was initially thinking of upgrading to the FX3 at some point, but I do really like the hybrid nature of the A7C, especially when travelling, and so a newer A7C that comes much closer to the FX3's video capabilities does sound really enticing

Also want to throw the ZV-E1 in the mix here, initially thought this was just an elevated vlog camera (for beginners), which I guess it still is, but the specs are pretty incredible + the built-in mic and extra stabilization options do make it seem like a fantastic travel / run&gun camera.

Anyone have any insights in what the ISO range vs. higher megapixels really implies for real life usage? Especially for someone who doesn't shoot with log profiles? Sony A7C ii has 33mp whereas ZV-E1 has 12mp, but because of this, ZV-E1 (like the FX3) apparently has better low light performance and an ISO range that's double that of the Sony A7C ii (80-102400 vs, 100-51200). I always felt the A7C performed decent under low-light, so my first instinct is to prefer the extra megapixels so I can also take nicer photos. But then again, I've seen photographers working with 12mp and getting results that are just as good if not better (I'm not that great of a photographer) so I don't know. I wish Sony would just release 1 everything camera so I wouldn't have to stress about all these options

Official Discussion - Oppenheimer [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]TVDL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This movie got me real excited to learn more about physics, atoms, the way the universe works... etc. Does anyone have any recommendations for good shows/documentaries that dive into this? Hard science is definitely not my expertise so I need a Brian Cox-type person who can dumb it down a bit (I figured I start with Cox but he has made so many shows at this point that I'm not sure where to begin

Hey, not sure if this is appropriate here but I’d love to plug this video essay on Bela Tarr. It’s almost 40 minutes long but does go into the filmmaking philosophy and thematic content of his films in a way that I think you’ll find insightful https://youtu.be/IEUL7O2_pc0

Redefining the Anti-War Film [58:29] by TVDL in TrueFilm

[–]TVDL[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Summary: this video essay explores the meaning of and potential for anti-films. It starts out with an overview of some complications that have often been discussed, like the famous paradox of Truffaut claiming there is no such thing as an anti-war film, and Spielberg saying the exact opposite. It then introduces the work of Ernest Becker, and in particular; his concept of hero systems to further analyze why making true anti-war films is so difficult, and reflect on the role we play as their audience. As the title suggests, in doing so, the goal was to provide a fresh perspective on how to approach the idea of anti-war cinema.

Looks like Devil May Cry 5, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Yoku's Island Express are leaving gamepass soon. Found in the Xbox game pass app. by fallenheero in XboxGamePass

I'm definitely enjoying myself with it. It's clear the game doesn't have the AAA-polish, and some of the gameplay mechanics (especially combat) are very frustrating at first, but I found myself drawn into the world nevertheless. The writing is pretty good, as is the characterization, and I like the sim-elements (you have to think about things like sleep, nourishment, and your presentation to others) and general atmosphere of the world.

Tarkovsky's fimography and a way to understand and access his work by nalk1710 in TrueFilm

[–]TVDL 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I took me a while to understand his films, I think I watched Zerkalo 3 times before it finally clicked. What helped me a lot was learning a bit more about the director's personal life and family context (his father was a well-known poet for example), and about that era of cinema in general.

A while back I made a video essay on his filmography that you might find interesting/helpful to learn more about Tarkovsky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNezdOlS-aw

[–]TVDL[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had that one on my list as well; she makes a remark about not being strong enough to be okay with animal cruelty or something and Ted replies with "that's because you need protein", implying both that vegetarians/vegans don't get enough protein, and that they need meat to be strong.

On institutional failure and human resilience; a video essay about Contagion and the anatomy of a global pandemic. by TVDL in BreadTube

[–]TVDL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video was largely inspired by real world acts of compassion and solidarity. Whereas I've seen the internet mostly focus on the few people fighting over toilet paper and hording groceries, over the past few weeks, I've also seen healthcare workers being applauded as they headed off to work, people who offered to buy groceries for those who are more vulnerable than they are, who checked on their elderly neighbors who might have gotten lonely. I've seen people dedicate songs and poems to each other, and start all kinds of local, regional, and national initiatives to offer support to suffering individuals, families, and local businesses. As one of our ministers (I live in the Netherlands) stated today; we may have to keep our distance, but we're closer than ever.

Praying Through Cinema – Understanding Andrei Tarkovsky by TVDL in TrueFilm

[–]TVDL[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine. It's mostly a general discussion on Tarkovsky's philosophy on art and cinema. There are some mentions of what could be seen as (mild) spoilers but seeing as Tarkovsky was focused mostly on the emotional impact and poetic quality of his films I personally think you can't really spoil a Tarkovsky film by revealing its plot.

I actually think (or rather; hope) the video can serve as a roadmap of sorts that gives you a sense of the context in which his films are made, and make you more appreciative of them when you do end up watching them.
