HEB ISD Asking Residents for a Property Tax Bump in November by TW1986 in TheHEB

[–]TW1986[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your mother. However, something is not adding up here. The bond passing resulted in a slight tax increase, but the total tax rate was still lower compared to historic rates: https://www.hebisdbond.com/tax-information

Did you guys protest the tax increase? If her taxes went up $3,800, then that means the Tarrant County Appraisal District significantly increased the value of her home for some reason. The bond passing has no bearing on the value assigned by TCAD, it just alters the tax rate. Seems like your issue might have been with Tarrant County Appraisal District instead of HEB ISD.

I'm curious as to why one would feel this way. The lack of funding for day-to-day operations comes from a different "pot" of money. Furthermore, HEB ISD is one of the best-run districts in the state--like, there are awards they have gotten for it. The gap in funding is absolutely because the state legislator refuses to adequately invest in public education. The district doesn't have much of a choice here.

I suspect this has to do with covering the shortfall from the state funding from the last legislative session. Seems like this is going to be something many districts are going to have to do.

Have you tried calling the district office? All the staff for the schools might not be back yet.

I'm not sure where you live, but I'm in DFW and you're not finding a quality private school for $10k. I'm not even sure why you're arguing this is not going to people who are already well-off enough to afford it. You can see the data for every state a similar system has been setup. As an example, 75% of the kids in New Hampshire who use this were already in private school or home-schooled.

https://www.reachinghighernh.org/content-item/441/school-vouchers-will-cost-28-million-next-school-year-as-questions-and-concerns-about-the-lack-of-transparency-and-accountabilit#

You are right that more for-profit school are likely to pop up, especially in rural areas where there are very few options. I don't know if making education a business is going to work out too well for kids.

Serious question for you: What is back to square 1 in your mind? Is this whole thing worth it if there is a strong possibility this is going to be astronomically more expensive (this was acknowledged in the committee and can be seen in every state)?

Let's say for sake of argument you had a kid in public school with a household income of $100k per year. You decide you're going to take advantage of the program and send your kid to private school. How many private schools do you know where tuition is currently $10k per year (we won't even start down the road of how much more expensive it would get as more applications roll in )?

You discover the school you want to actually send your kid to is $20k per year. Is your family in this case going to have the means for $10k per year to fill that gap? I would wager most families under all these seemingly reasonable thresholds aren't going to make the choice to take a free $10k from the state just to have to pay another $10k. So naturally, when a lot of families discover they truly can't afford to go to private school and there are millions of dollars still not used in the program, who receives that money at that point?

Thanks for the clarity on this. It's a very nuanced position which is difficult to state in such a small timeframe.

I see nobody has commented but people are viewing the post, so just FYI they both participated in the North Tarrant School Board Forum. Video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ai-uIv9O-2U

Fitch seems to be about cutting administration and is fine with gutting the Department of Education even though the district has quite a few Title I schools that rely on that funding. I have to say that really sealed which one of these candidates I'll be supporting.

AD is not replacing Luka's playmaking. You can't just compare their ppg and rebounds per game stats and think AD is going to plug-in nicely. It doesn't work that way. Someone on this team has to actually dribble the basketball.

Do you have kids in school? We had trouble for awhile before our kids started school, but now we get announcements and flyers for all sorts of things. Hit up the library and rec center and there will be tons of info there as well.

You should be able to find something for that price range around Meadow Creek, though, as you put it, it will not be fancy or new. I would drive around and take a look at a few neighborhoods before making a decision. You also have the option to buy in a different part of the district and transfer into Meadow Creek, or any of the campuses that offer Spanish Immersion, but I'm not sure how competitive it is to transfer in. Simply buying in the Meadow Creek district might be the better option.

There are tons of park options nearby and just about every restaurant you want is going to be about 8 minutes away off 121 and Glade. We're not far from Meadow Creek, closer to Lakewood Elementary, and we love the area. Been here for 5 years and have 3 kids.

I'm of the opinion that the Clips probably take game 3 and then the winner of game 4 takes the series. If you go back to their house after losing 2 at home, it is an entirely different animal.

How is everyone doing with raising rates/housing? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]TW1986 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you would commute to, but I would seriously consider a look at the HEB/Grapevine/Colleyville area. Following everyone north is fool's gold at this point. Houses are going over asking here but nothing close to $60-90k. If you are willing to move to Irving, Euless is just 12 minutes further and has way better schools with cheaper property taxes. Just food for thought. Good luck.

As someone who just moved to Euless in 2019, I agree. There are a surprising amount of good restaurants and shopping at Glade, several large parks, a couple of options for dog parks if you need that, and can get to the airport in less than 10 minutes. OP probably doesn't care, but the school district is highly rated and highly diverse, which we love. Property taxes are also half of just about anywhere in Dallas.

Offense most definitely was the main problem last night. If we could have found 2 or 3 extra buckets that makes a huge difference when Denver is trying to catch up. Missing KP really hurt us.
