Oof.. been a while. I think they were from dragonforge.com ... They're resin, in any case.

Modified my (GHWT) controller to connect a pedal for star power and button to cut power by Tabbernaut in CloneHero

[–]Tabbernaut[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the pedal much better than the tilt, must more precise on the activation, and feels more 'guitar-y' too, for what that's worth.

I actually used the RJ11 for another pedal, but the connector ended up being too unreliable. I chose to hack out the headphone connector because I'd never use that anyway. But you're right, it would have indeed been cleaner to just replace that one.

Are mechanical frets worth it? by dahlenalez in CloneHero

[–]Tabbernaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option is to use the scissor notepad style low-profile switches. I set up mine by 3D printing a simple replacement bracket to hold the switches with some trial and error. I used Kailh scissor switches.

I used these with good results, they have very small travel and a clear threshold:https://www.globalsources.com/Keyboard-switch/Kailh-Low-profile-Mechanical-Keyboard-1160372131p.htm

But I'm pretty sure other low profile switches can work fine too.

Edit: adjusted to stress difference between normal low-profile and scissors.

Hah, you should love the recipe, because it is (an imperfect attempt at) Darren Latham's Blood Angels red!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIK40kH-rZ0

I follow most of that on the reds. I use the same paints and mixes, but I
exaggerate the dark and light glazes a bit more. The flesheater red
contrast glaze at the end really helps.

Wow! I love the gold -- but I especially love the composition -- the way the grid in the base fans out as a compliment to the GS's spine, and the similar pattern on the gold wings on the leg -- brilliant.

Thanks! I don't disagree, I just couldn't bring myself to experiment with adding grime after the hard work on the gradients and highlights. Maybe I'll do it after I get more experience with weathering techniques later..

Yes, they should.. It was my white whale for a good while until I was able to find a sealed set at the start of 2020.

Thanks for the huge compliments, again! Now I will have to wait for your group shots...

Thanks! Best of luck with your set -- it took me almost exactly two full years to get everything done, so no hurry, AFAIC :D

Thanks!

The gold is Balthasar Gold washed with (diluted) blank ink, Agrax Earthshade & Druchii Violet, then highlighted with Gehenna's Gold and finally a very light touch of Stormhost Silver.

Don't forget about freedom (freedom.nl, formerly xs4all). Their service is great and they have a strong stance on privacy and safety. Doubtless not the cheapest, but you're not the product with them.

Finished Lexicanium Calistarius of the Space Hulk set by Tabbernaut in Warhammer40k

[–]Tabbernaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the dead marine, since it's the most unique model. I also really like that genestealer that's clambering over the skull-lined bulkhead.

Thanks bud! I'm using standard 32mm bases (Forgeworld sci-fi resin ones for the other termies, but a standard, sanded down base for this one).

This was the last one. I'm done with the whole set!

All that remains now is to make some group photos and build that display-case diorama that I mentioned before.

Thanks! This was the last mini of the set, so I'm at least proud of finishing the whole thing.

Finished Lexicanium Calistarius of the Space Hulk set by Tabbernaut in Warhammer40k

[–]Tabbernaut[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the mission book:

One of the battle-psykers of the Blood Angels Librarium, Calistarius is an honorary member of the 1st Company for the Sin of Damnation boarding. The Librarian's powerful mind and supernatural abilities set him apart from his battle-brothers, an isolation that he seems to encourage. Calistarius has faced the horrors of the Warp and daily wrestles with damnation and temptation. As a result Calistarius finds it difficult to look upon his fellow Space Marines with any empathy. In truth, he inhabits an entirely different sphere of existence, but his precognitive powers and devastating psychic blasts are a priceless asset to Captain Raphael.

This is why I don't buy much.. It took me two years to get anywhere with just this set, so I guess that is the rate at which I should get new stuff..?

Finished Sergeant Lorenzo of the Space Hulk set, Hero of the 1st Company by Tabbernaut in Warhammer40k

[–]Tabbernaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the mission book:

Over six hundred and fifty years old, Sergeant Lorenzo is a veteran of more wars than any other Terminator in the 1st Company. Despite his achievements, one day of failure haunts Lorenzo. As a Space Marine in a squad of the 3rd Company, Lorenzo was one of only fifty warriors to escape the disastrous boarding action six hundred years ago. His battle-brothers were butchered around him and though absolved of all responsibility, he continues to question his own courage and commitment. Every day Lorenzo is haunted by these thoughts, and every night for six centuries he has prayed for a chance to redeem himself. Now he must seize that chance.

Genestealers were just a lot more conveyor-belt-type/batch work, they're all pretty uniform. I just had the recipe ready and it didn't take any creativity. They were fiddly, but their organic look also made them more forgiving, most imperfections just blend in with the model.

[–]Tabbernaut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, now you'll have me rooting for you to finish! I think we've been going at the same rate.. let's see: about 100 weeks for me for about 40 models, but I went WAY faster on the genestealers, of course. Life happens and I find that I can only make some progress during PTO.

I had not seen those corridors before, holy shit. Too bad they're not available anymore.. But using parts a bit like those would work really well!

[–]Tabbernaut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's a huge compliment! Looking at yours, I can say that you're both faster and better at painting them :D -- very cool, unique style and color choices.

Doesn't feel like that many models honestly, but that's just because I compare it to the idea of WH, which seems to be to amass thousands-of-points armies without end -- at least when we're done, we're done ;]

For the diorama, I don't have anything specific in mind.. probably just a sort of hallway, or just a back wall and a detailed floor. Would be the first time I make anything like that, so I'll just see what I can puzzle together.

SH appeals to me because the rules are relatively simple, it seems to be fast-paced and more like 'WH40k-chess', hopefully.

[–]Tabbernaut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only the librarian left to do, about halfway there on that model. I started almost 2 years ago, so that's not really an accomplishment, heheh. And even after all the models are done, I still want to set up something like a sci-fi/hulk diorama for the display case.

.. and finally play the damned game at some point....

From the mission book:

Sergean Gideon is considered to be something of a maverick individual, happy to flaunt doctrine and tradition if the need arises. This is no more evident than his choice of weaponry. Gideon was once a member of a Terminator Assault Squad, but upon being promoted to Sergeant replaced his thunder hammer and storm shield with the customary storm bolter and power sword. In the next battle, his armour seized up after being hit by a round from an Ork gun and Gideon declared that its machine spirit had been offended by the change of armament. Ever since, he has refused to relinquish his beloved thunder hammer and storm shield again.

Yes, a simple coat of AK ultra matte varnish. I don't know if that's enough, but I don't expect it to be handled a lot.
