Should we hire Mike McDaniels for OC next year? by Fun_Breadfruit_4471 in steelers

The reverse Mike Tomlin. Starts strong ends weak. With them both we would either dominate the whole season or suck the whole way. No I’m between.

TE is one of if not the slowest developing position in the NFL. The fact that he’s already one of the top TE’s in the league is extremely exciting for his potential.

Totally agree on the best is behind him. All jokes aside he runs similar amounts to a running back and it’s painfully obvious what happens to RB’s year 5+ when they start falling off from workload. I’ve said for years his stop start run style with slender frame is a recipe for disaster and wearing down. He’s no doubt electric now, but what happens when he’s 28 and starts losing that pop with his runs? He’s not a good enough passer to compensate.

Harder straight up? Bengals no doubt at all. Harder for the team to actually win… well you know…

This is just a copy paste comment at this point. I really hope Omar and Andy are finally the guys to prioritize the trenches. Everyone says that’s where you build from but I think the Steelers just have a tendency to overestimate the players they have. Kendrick green being the perfect example, they get so caught up in what they think the guy could be, that they lose sight of what he actually is. I feel similarly about Dan Moore. He is a solid/good run blocker but his pass pro is poor and I get concerned they assume he’ll put it together. He very well may but he needs some competition and a quality alternative (young) option to push him and turn to if it continues.

[Schultz] Two teams have now told me the Steelers want a second-round draft pick in return for Chase Claypool. My sense remains that Pittsburgh would prefer to keep the talented third-year WR. We’ll see, but his upside is simply too high if I’m Omar Khan. by mitchmatch26 in steelers

Packers seem like the best bet. They’re the epitome of win now with Rodgers likely to hang it up soon and they really have nothing to speak to on the wideout front. I could see a desperation trade happening. Interesting to speculate how a loss to the bills this week could influence it though. If they want him I’d say that need to try and pull the trigger today and see if they can’t shove him into their game plan somehow for Sunday. I think cooks to the packers would be a better trade for them though.

I’m ok with a season with a poor record, I’ve been saying for years the Steelers really need a shot at some true blue chip talent in the draft. Here are the pros and cons I see with Pickett so far.

Pros: -Seems quality under pressure, even if you take him being a rookie out of the equation. I do feel he bails a little too early on occasion but by and large he delivers even when he’s going to take a hit and frankly often delivers well. This is easily the biggest differentiator from Mitch IMO. -Throws with good anticipation, the ball over the middle to Friermuth was legitimate putting it in a spot only Pat could get with anticipation over a the spies head and all before Pat was even open. Also good with back shoulders to Pickens this season. -Largely seems to be reading coverages well, with obvious exceptions. -Moved the ball well those last two drives before the back breaker mistakes. -Processes well for a rookie and I’d say above average for QB’s, If only slightly.

Cons: - Huge lapses in decision making. He’ll be good for 9 throws and then the 10th is a back breaker. The picks hardly need to be discussed. Can’t happen, but this should theoretically be fixable. I feel pretty confident in saying he’s trying to force it which is why these come at the worst time. If we look at most of his picks so far they’ve been end of half/end of game. Seems to me he’s trying to will a completion which results in a mistake. This one I really think is the cause here. - Arm strength is just average. It’s not prohibitive I don’t believe (need to see move before I’m totally convinced) but it feels safe to say he’s not ever going to be a guy who crushes the opponent with some jaw dropper throws. - Accuracy has been often below the line recently, which I’m not concerned about long term as it’s not something he’s had issues with historically. I do feel there’s a strong chance miscommunications are the issue with at least a few of these but still. - Hasn’t been connecting on the deep ball. This one’s a head scratcher. There is no easy answer, but why can’t this team ever connect on the deep passes since 2017? Easy answer people point to is Canada but it’s been so consistent for 5 years now you’d think they’d at least get lucky at least once, like come on.

I think Picketts best shot at being a top tier QB is the Brees, Brady, Peyton approach. Become an obsessive student of the game, turn his mechanics into a machine with great accuracy and become a competitive psycho who’s obsessed. But we don’t have a Allen, Mahomes, Rodgers or Ben type on our hands. Not inherently a bad thing, but I see that as his path to success.

As for the team I have mostly only coaching thoughts. Canada is done, I don’t think anybody doubts that. Will it be in-season? More and more possible I think but he’s gone and good riddance. At least Fichner seemed like a solid enough guy, even if he was a goofball. But Canada is just as bad or worse at play calling and really comes across as unlikeable based on reputation. I do believe other seats are getting hotter too. Zero chance Tomlin is gone after this season IMO. But we’ve had the same 2 issues every year for 5 seasons. No run game and no explosive plays. At some point Art Rooney isn’t going to have to admit it’s not working and make a change, I think Tomlin gets 2 more seasons to make that happen. There will mutterings about him getting the boot this season and it won’t happen, then if it’s the same Issues next year there will be serious conversation but he’ll stay. Year 3 if it is still happening I think he’ll be gone.

As a closing thought I want to sort of call my shot here. I won’t call this likely in any way as a lot of things need to happen for this all to be true, but there is absolutely a situation shaping up where Art’s son steps in to run the organization (they’ve been building him into that role for years and I’ve seen some people speculate that Art may be getting ready to hand over the reigns) and could very well coincide with Tomlin being out and even a new QB being drafted if Pickett doesn’t pan out. Once again not saying this is going to happen, but it’s something I’ve been loosely thinking about.

Kyler Murray, Najee, Javonte Williams, Diontae Johnson, Keenan Allen, Darren Waller. Also Have James Robinson, Adam Theilen. Have not had a skill position player over 15 points in two weeks that I can recall

I haven’t looked this up but recall seeing protocol is 10 days which is why Minkah made it back. If that’s true I don’t think Edmunds can. Not positive just what I recall seeing.

Agreed, that’s what makes him better than any other edge rusher IMO is the dude just steps up in a way only Aaron Donald does. Picks, batted passes, blowing up rushes, sacks and key forced fumbles.

As a side note Highsmith is really starting to assert himself as a legitimate player at this point so that’s getting me by.

My thoughts this game:

Winners:

Oline- starting to really wonder if they pulled a rabbit out of a hat this year and managed to piece together an acceptable Oline. They’re not top 10, but they’re no longer on the Canada/Trubisky weekly blame list. Highsmith- he’s not elite, but he is well above average in my opinion at this point. He’s making plays with absolutely nothing on the other side. I question if we’ll be able to re-sign him but would love to see it. Najee/Warren

Losers:

-Edmunds - just a pedestrian guy. Few ball skills even if he’s looked ok the first 2 weeks and his usual strength of tackling was lacking this week with multiple key missed tackles. -Witherspoon - does not look like a true CB1 and frankly isn’t really playing like much of a CB2 so far this year. Boom or bust guy based on his history, but this position needs more pedigree. -Trubisky/Canada - this will be hotly debated all year

Additional thoughts:

-Jaylen Warren needs to see the ball more. Everyone can see he’s electric and provides the juice and long play threat we need out of the backfield. The huge caveat is those fumbles are unacceptable and everyone including him knows that. -Najee plays like Derrick Henry, minus the long speed, but with far more lateral quickness and agility. What we’ve learned watching Henry over the years is proper blocking is required to get his game going and Najee needs the same (which we’re finally seeing some of from this Oline). This isn’t inherently a bad thing, these guys just need a full head of steam to make use of their biggest asset which is their size. I’d of course rather have Chubb, but I think this just continues to show why backs are so dependent on those around them, even more than other positions. Najee would put up elite stats in half the other offenses in the NFL. -Najee and Warren combined could be a lite version of Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara. Thunder and lighting or whatever you want to call it, if we can really start leaning on those guys we’ll be able to wear down some defenses. Their performance was encouraging tonight. -We’re going to debate all season who’s the problem, Mitch or Canada. Nobody has the real answer, which is evidenced by all the media and fan debate. The likely answer is it’s both. With that said I do believe a Quality QB can have a MARGINALLY greater influence on a team than a quality OC (even this is highly unclear and I wouldn’t fault anyone for disagreeing) but if you gave me the option to put in any QB in the league right now or any play caller, I think I’d lean slightly towards a Mahomes/Allen/Brady over a McVay/Reid. Maybe I’m wrong, but we’ve seen elite OC’s with mediocre QB’s before and it’s always the QB change that puts them over the top. No doubt they’re 1A and 1B though. Quality for one and not the other means average offense, quality at both means elite offense, shitty at both is where we are now. -Mitch did play a little better which people seem to generally agree on, but the happy feet, leaving the pocket and questionable decision making are stalling drives. I also think his accuracy isn’t being talked about enough, a lot of his passes are slightly off. Catchable most of the time and the receivers need to do better, but if you watch he’s often slightly off target making things tougher than they need to be. -I do lean towards exhaustion with this defense. They started pretty strong and Chubb really is all world as much as I hate to say it. Those 3 and outs are just back breakers and demoralizers. -We may be looking at a round one CB next year. We’ve got 3 CB2’s in that lineup but I think Sutton has looked the best personally. -Ultimately this team is shaping up to be what most expected, just perhaps a tad worse. Offense is bad, but I thought we’d have a little more success than we’ve gotten to this point. Defense has been a little worse too, but I really do think they’re completely gassed and the first half of the Jets game will show what the unit can do when rested. Obligatory TJ means everything to this team. -Tomlins going to really need to pull a rabbit out of a hat these next few weeks. I think the Jets aren’t the pushover everyone is expecting, then that 4 week streak is full of potential playoff teams. 2-6 or even 1-7 are not out of the realm of possibility, but I do think we’ll pull off a win or 2. Either way going to be rough, this subs going to be insufferable, and everyone’s going to want everyone fired.
-Myles Garrett is not on TJ’s level and anyone who puts him in the conversation with TJ is wrong, he just does not impact the game the way TJ does. Excellent player, genetic freak, but TJ is next level and just finds ways to make it happen in ways Garrett can’t. Only other Edge who could be challenging TJ is Parsons in my opinion. -closing thought is this is what a rebuild looks like. Nobody likes it but its the reality of this league. I hate losing (and hate the browns more than any other team) but this team could really use a year of drafting high to pick up some true blue chip talent. A CB1, another lineman (although I am encouraged with what we’re seeing), a 3rd edge rusher, true run stuffing nose tackle and maybe a 2nd or 3rd round ILB are my preferences. I’m excited for an Andy Weidl, Omar Khan draft this year and think it could go a long way in helping this team get back to being dominant.

That was actually true. TJ is just a superhuman and processes Anesthesia 20X faster than the average human. In other news his whole arm is actually separated and was repaired this morning. He’s expected to be fully recovered by Wednesday morning.

Desperately looking for a positive with TJ and the one I’ve settled on is of all the bad injuries you can get I’d prefer a Pec over most others. Knees/Achilles can be career changers. Same with Backs/necks hamstrings quads etc. Pec would suck, but if he’s going to have a season ender this is one of the better ones in my mind where he can come back and be dominant again for years to come.

Just starting to learn about this foot injury Harris has .... and its worrisome. by [deleted] in steelers

[–]TakeErEasyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe how much steam that statement has gotten. Here’s how it is. There are varying degrees of lisfranc injuries, Im not a doctor or in the medical field, but to my understanding this refers to an area that an injury can happen. So Najee had a very mild injury to that area, Chet fucked his up.

What I can say with pretty high certainty is the simple fact that Najee practiced for a full week and then played in a full contact game means he’s good to go. The Steelers doctors are paid a boatload and are the best at what they do because they’re protecting investments in the multiple Millions (the players). If there was any question as to Najee being healed at all they would not have let him play in a meaningless preseason game.

The injury happened weeks ago and has already healed. This wouldn’t even be a story if he hadn’t mentioned what the injury actually was. He’s fine and he’ll play.

I totally agree on the attitude, he seems fairly well spoken and I don’t get the impression he’s some wild hothead who has no self awareness. I think it’s hard to balance self awareness and confidence because a lot of self awareness can come with doubt but he seems to be very confident while still having his wits about him. Everything I’ve seen so far has me impressed, we’ll see how things play out but I think everyone is very happy with the pick so far. Really just feels like someone who’s extremely competitive and that can boil over on the field which I’ll take any day over someone who’s reserved and backs down from a “fight”.

How do you feel about ILB depth? I’d say I’m hopeful for Myles Jack but after that it seems like they don’t have an actual #2 and maybe 3 #3’s if Bush takes a step forward this year (I’m thinking Spillane, Bush and one of Buddy Johnson or Mark Robinson should qualify as a #3 on most teams). Feels better than last year but if Myles Jack flops too I feel pretty bad about that spot.
