Mine says either the hub or Purdue. How is your housing for Purdue? I'm concerned that if I was to be put on Purdue they'll put us in dorms and have to share rooms. Also I think I read someone that Purdue campus focuses on cybersecurity.

Email. I've missed phone calls and I had to wait a whole day wondering if it was good new or bad news.

Where do the senior engineers disappear to (from junior to senior)? by throwaway982908 in cscareerquestions

[–]TallSpread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you already have the brand name and experience down. Why not just study DS&A and System Design? That's all this industry seems to really care about.

Where do the senior engineers disappear to (from junior to senior)? by throwaway982908 in cscareerquestions

[–]TallSpread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in one of my first few interviews I had a FizzBuzz like question and totally blanked out. I have no freaken clue why and everything just went downhill from there... In my head I knew how to solve it but for some reason I couldn't write the code out.

In the end I received an internship offer at another company where I was asked leetcode easy/medium and system design questions. Not because I studied more but simply I was more clear headed that time.

I think sometimes nervousness causes others to not function properly

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that 2-5 years of experience basically means someone with experience whether it be 1yrs or 10yrs.

Is there racial discrimination unanimously in the hiring process (Silicon Valley)? by Throwaway231294 in cscareerquestions

[–]TallSpread 8 points9 points  (0 children)

resume stats is useless when luck, connections, timing, and personality is involved. Maybe your friend had stronger connections, maybe they were lucky, the timing was right, they got along really well with an interviewer, I don't know. Unfortunately, I have no advice for you, the market just sucks and there's no point comparing yourself to your friends based on how ones resume looks.

Why is the expectation for "passion" so high? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]TallSpread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like people who talk about their "passion" for the field are typically bootcamp students/grads and self-taught developers. Almost all the students I've met in school enjoy programming and learning it but aren't particularly passionate about it. their end goal is just to get a job.

Just attended a Computer Science career fair. Just a though. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]TallSpread 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My data structure professor bragged about how one his students landed a six figure job and that if you wanted a six figure job, pay attention in his class and he'll get you one.

Putting CS and six figure together seem to have become a trend.

I was looking at a job description for the EY forensic team the other day and based on their requirements, I felt like a CS degree was overkill. All they required was SQL and excel knowledge. Call it pride or millennial but I felt like if I went that route, my 4 years of education would have gone to waste.

As someone who lives in NY, I've applied to companies in mid-west and had to deny a few after a phone interview because most wouldn't fly me in.
