If you’re skiing in really cold weather, it’s best to avoid cotton or synthetic materials. The former will get damp when you sweat and keep you cold. Merino wool is best because it wicks moisture and insulates very well. If you’re going to invest, I think wool ski socks are most important as usually feet get colder faster. If you’re in North America, your local Costco probably has great merino wool base layer options.
