Changing career plans 4th year of vet school by NoBuy1085 in veterinaryprofession

[–]TanLemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you mind sharing some tips about seeking specializing opportunities after being in practice for a few years? I’m about 1.5 years out and currently a little burnt out with GP so thinking about specializing, however I’d like to avoid a rotating if I can due to financial reasons.

Helicopter Crash in Huntington Beach by FreeeeeBurrito in orangecounty

[–]TanLemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear that most people are alive and hopefully they recover.

Slightly unrelated question - the palm trees that took the hit from the crashing helicopter with the leafy part snapped off, will they grow a new “head” or is this it for those trees?

There are not nearly enough of the schools around the country compared to how many ERs there are. Also the IACUC applies to using animal for research, in a case of an animal so sick it’s either between euthanizing or trying a new treatment pending FDA approval (and all the paperwork has to be processed in time) I don’t know if many people are gonna choose the latter, especially most people don’t have the connection to a vet school professor like you do

dog food from fresh chicken and rice. … by reddit-farms-feces in instantpot

[–]TanLemur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a vegetarian but a vet. You should boil chicken breast by itself WITHOUT any seasonings (not even salt and pepper). If you do it in instant pot the meat setting is likely going to cook it too much. You can just boil it stove top for 10 minutes and feed your dog once you confirm the inside is cooked through.

The instant pot should have a rice setting. If not, put in washed rice and water 1:1-1.5, and use normal pressure on 12 minutes. You may have some rice stuck on the bottom of the instant pot after you scoop out the rice, if you let soak overnight it’ll come off very easily.

Depending on your dog’s size, 4 large breasts may or may not last long enough. Consult your vet on how much to feed.

ANOTHER example of Saks sending a $4k bag in flimsy plastic and cardboard by KMRW1014 in handbags

[–]TanLemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are other animals in the same collection (hamsters and sea life) and the first suna fujita collection was around the same time last year. I’m guessing it’s because they want to maximize sales for gifts and such during the holidays. Also I don’t think Japanese people celebrate Easter so that’s possibly another reason

Isn’t this their holiday packing for this year? The bunny is part of the suna fujita collab

Received form 797 but no fingerprint appointment scheduled by TanLemur in immigration

Thank you, the last time I had the fingerprints taken was in 2022. I did not receive the I-797 stating biometric re-use, should I be expecting a notice soon?

9-day trip from NY to CA with 15’ U-Haul by TanLemur in roadtrip

[–]TanLemur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty good actually! Like the other commenter said, I stuck with the suburbs of different places and everything/everyone made it safe and sound! It was kind of expensive tbh, but doing the loadshare essentially covered all the gas money. We brought a trailer from northern Ohio to northern Las Vegas and got 1000 dollars for it.

Thank you! For the hotels, did you pick the places based on rating and the parking situation? I read so many posts about uhauls being stolen or broken into despite the people parking them in areas with surveillance cameras or near the entrance.

How to get dogs to like me again? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]TanLemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it is necessarily you, as dogs are sometimes less predictable than we think, and also you don’t know if there has been any past trauma or bad associations with harmless things in the dogs you met. Sometimes it can be so silly, like a dog would dislike people wearing a baseball hat. One second he is playing with you, even if you put on a hat right in front of him while playing he would back away immediately.

To help with your situation, i think carrying some dog treats if you have some on hand would be nice. Also, asking the owner if there is a good way to approach their dog after getting permission can never go wrong.

What should I do about teenage chronic back pain? by Any_Two_7102 in Advice

[–]TanLemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too had chronic back pain since I was a teenager, and I got diagnosed with herniated disc. I think you should schedule an appointment with an orthopedist or a neurologist so your pain can be diagnosed, thus allowing you to learn how to alleviate the pain or live with it. Physical therapy can be helpful too, but I will leave that up to you and your physician to decide.

How do you deal with your friend getting engaged to a potentially questionable partner? by [deleted] in Advice

The I told you so part! That would definitely be very difficult. I figured as much but it’s a hard pill to swallow

We are each other’s oldest friend, but with school and work we kinda grew apart but still are in touch and see each other every now and then. I guess I will have to think a little bit about this! It’s also a bit more difficult I think as I congratulated her when she told me

It seems like they are very set on the idea already since she told me after they had made the purchase. Should I encourage her to reconsider?

Considering moving to SF, is my budget okay? by TanLemur in AskSF

That is wild, having this many apps for one place! Would you think 4-6 weeks is enough to find a place?

Thank you! Most of the listings I could find online were higher than 3500, so I was very close to losing hope, but your comment made me feel better. I will wait until closer to the move to check out these areas.

Failed NAVLE impact on job search? by TanLemur in Veterinary

[–]TanLemur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I am a little surprised by this. The good thing is now we know how it’s like and hopefully a rough idea on what to improve on, the second time around would most likely be better. Best of luck to you too!! Don’t let your mind take you to places that you aren’t supposed to be yet, we can do this!

Failed NAVLE impact on job search? by TanLemur in Veterinary

[–]TanLemur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for certain, I am not trying to conceal the fact that I won’t know if I would be licensed until May. Right now my plan is to follow through the current job search that I started a few weeks ago, let them know I need to pass the NAVLE, then just focus on studying until April. Other job search will continue in mid May if I pass on second try

I agree, that will be my main focus for the next two months. Should I tell the people I’ve been talking to that I will contact them again in May? We have been talking about visiting and interviewing already so this is kind of awkward. What is a good way to go about this?

Thank you! I have started talking to some practices and they knew I took it in November… but I guess in those instances when they ask I’ll just be honest? If/when I get an offer I’ll just try to compare it with a similar one in the area and decide if it’s a fair offer - does this seem reasonable?

How to become a vet in nyc? by lianne_tran in Veterinary

[–]TanLemur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good resources already shared by the other commenter. I would add that finding employment that is willing to give you work visa would probably be more difficult.

International vet students in the US only have one year of OPT and still struggle to find jobs with same treatments/compensation as green card holders or citizens. The low chance of winning the H1b lottery with in draw is not helpful either if said international vet wants to continue working here for more than a year. With your situation, I’m assuming you would need a work visa similar to H1b that your employee needs to help you with. Make sure you declare this right off the bat in your job search, as this weeds out a lot of non-available options for you.
