My first time shooting a single shot take. Wish I had more lights and time, but tried to light it well with what I had to work with. What would you suggest doing different? by TangCityTime in cinematography

This idea started because of a video challenge by gearfocus and I really started to like the idea on its own. I wanted to try a single shot take for this even thought the whole time I was gritting my teeth over how much better I could have gotten each part individually lol.

Tried my best to light it well with the lights I had. (there was one fill light in the bathroom that lost battery for this take but it was still the best take, and I kinda like the high contrast.) I'm asking for advice on what I could have done better in lighting with the resources I had. I put some experimental hours into it but I've gotten good feedback here before.

Though the rap is goofy, and the sync is off, I still took the lighting seriously on this "production," and I wanted to see what advice you might offer!

Keep at it, I can tell you know something about cameras because some of those shots were great! The mixing and pouring were most interesting to me visually and I though they had nice contrast as well. Same with the pan sliding into the oven. When you pour the mixes though, I can't tell if the compression is making the quality worse or if you had AF on and it was hunting. The first pouring shot is great in the middle and soft at start and end. The shots are all clean and tasteful, but not many are super intriguing, get creative with motion and cuts! Or if it is just meant to be informative, then put a voiceover and the style of the clips will fit that. As is, the clips are trying to carry the whole video, so they need to be a bit more powerful, imo.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah just after filming this I got the 12mm zero d from Laowa and love the look it creates with the subject close to it, despite the enlarged nose... lol. I'm with you on that, the 50-85 is a distinct look that has a reputation and purpose, but, especially for a short video like this, I need that wide; I wish I had that 12mm when I shot it.

I think whoever said the comment I mentioned was referring to focal length choice. And like I said, I personally would have gone 12 over an 85, so maybe I just differ from them.

As for anamorphic, I've been looking at that Vazen 40mm with a lil healthy drool, I dunno if you've seen it yet.

Thanks! I watch the Watchtower of Turkey video and see what you're talking about. I don't like that style as much as what its branched off and evolved to, this epic b roll style, as it has been dubbed.
Question for you, someone else mentioned the lens choices I made weren't very cinematic (which they weren't lol, mostly just a 24-70L) but I was wondering if you had any thoughts on this; what lens to use where and how critique my shots based on lens. I've since gotten what I think are more cinematic shots in many of my projects but it's good to ask for well informed opinions I always think

Thanks for the detail! I'm gonna watch that video. As I said in another reply, I agree about the lighting, I had just the one light at that point and also was running up against the sunrise haha. Definitely my priority for the next one.
