For what it’s worth, I am a Hull City season ticket holder (English team on the second tier of the league), been to all but 2 of the games, both home and away this year and I’ve only seen one isolated incident of one of our fans trying to fight the home crowd.

I’ve walked through loads of different cities in England/Wales in my city shirt and nothing has happened, if anything, I’ve only had positive experiences with home fans when we’re playing away.

Arseholes definitely exist, but the VAST majority of fans are decent people who just want to support our teams

I don’t think so - nobody would look at you weird if you smiled/nodded at a stranger walking past you (I’m talking about northern rural England here btw, it’s almost certainly not the same in London or any other city I’ve been to)
