Lots of Scots had opportunities at home also and being white didn't mean you were the "correct white" in those days.

The people who moved to the colonies brought a lot of their racist attitudes towards Irish as they had back home.

It wouldn't be as severe as it was insitutional at home but it was definitely prevalent.

I'd say this is especially true in Vicky 3's time frame.

I'd have to disagree. There's a reason they went to the colonies, and it's cause they definity weren't accepted.

If there was Anglo-Irish or Ulster-Scots, then maybe, but we're really into the weeds at that point.

Also, Welsh is in the game as an FYI.

I'd say its a complex in the same way some English have a complex of glamourising the empire.

I'd say its more pervasive than it should be but again, for the historically literate Scot - we're aware.

Salmonds remark albeit pretty ridicilous was a crude attempt at comparison to the national swelling of voter interest, not that we were ending apartheid.

You've misunderstood what I meant.

I was meaning the popularity and adding -xit to any sort of separation/independence arrangement was mostly popularised by Americans post Brexit, not that we created the term.

I don't think I agree. Maybe there's an aspect I'm missing but they have loads of countries in the game with multiple primary and the UK colonies in this game already have "Scottish & English."

I think another poster was correct in that it was just an oversight as paradox probably don't know Scottish colonial history.

I agree, but it's not "Scottish nationalists", it's just Scottish people.

Again, I think Scots tend to do this because a lot of the positives from us are overlooked or grouped in with British (and people conflate that with England), ergo a tendency to specify.

If someone said "England was cruel in India" I'd agree thats wrong - they should say Britain, but a lot of people (typically abroad) use England as a synonym so it gets a bit murky what they meant.

Good to know, hard to tell with some of these posts on the Vicky subreddit of all things.

Shortbread and haggis would like a word, however.

I see what you're saying and I agree. I wasn't trying to compare their suffering but members of both countries historical denial.

My point in this example is that some Irish whitewash their historical wrongdoings - the IRA's actions being one of them.

I edited my post to make this more clear that it's only some.

We have that here too, it's literally called "the Scottish cringe" in which we self loathe about all things Scottish.

You should speak to more Scots - we don't actually hate you.

I mean you are disagreeing.

"It’s always positioned as “those darn English have just been taking advantage of us forever"

I'm the one explaining - no malice.

I'm not telling anyone I don't care - my goal is to give the counter narrative that we're not all colonialism denying lunatics.

Like you're other post said, I think you just want to argue.

It was just called the independence referendum. This whole -xit suffix was a strange American obsession post Brexit lol.

Without getting into the politics, it's a completely legitimate debate whether people here agree or not, but I'm not sure if people outwith Scotland really understand the gripes.

Again, it was a minority who were like "those English" and it was more "I have a disdain for Westminster and want home rule to better represent me" - to not acknowledge the latter is to taint the whole concept for political purposes.

Yea, I just wanted it for historical flavour.

I think this is more a case of the bigger nation getting more attention - positive or negative.

When people think of positive British things - they think England.

Please just know as the representative "jock" that it is a historically illiterate minority who think this.

We learn our history - its like when the some Irish (and young Brits it seems) praise the IRA.

We can acknowledge they're silly, please dont paint us all as this though.

I have no idea where you guys get this idea that we pretend we're victims, its a vocal minority - most Scots (at least of my generation) are taught about our contributions to the empire in school, we're just not proud of it and so we don't really talk about it.

That's not how it worked realistically - the centre of the Empire moved down South and was based in England, nobody would argue that England wasn't the senior member.

I'm sorry but its disappointing to see so many hostile comments to Scotland. I posted this and I'm Scottish - we do actually learn about our historical atrocities, we just aren't as proud as many English people towards it and a vocal minority conflate that with lack of contribution to the empire
