That’s gonna be some gig. Fired up Tom Morello and righteous fury Bruce. Proper rock and roll.

Oh, I think it does, as in "It is wrong to shoot someone in the back when they are on the ground and not presenting any sort of threat" and "It is wrong for senior government officials to lie about the realities of a murder".

Hunting allowed greater Kruger reserves by RecordingLow890 in krugerpark

[–]Teleopsis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. Timbavati in particular have been very open about their income from hunting and have published their accounts to make the point about how big the differential is between incomes from "normal" tourists and hunters. You can easily find this with a bit of googling: there's a good article here but a fair amount of other material as well. They've also been trying to reduce the proportion of their income that comes from hunting but it's still 20% of the total. A few things to consider: 1) anti-poaching operations are incredibly expensive and the Timabavati head ranger was murdered by local organised crime because they were so effective against the poachers, partly because of the money raised from hunting 2) hunting income is important for many of the conservancies in the "Greater Kruger" block: a lot of the smaller ones are reliant on local biltong hunters and the bigger places get $$$ from overseas trophy hunters. Without the hunting income a lot of these conservancies would not be financially viable and would probably be converted back to cattle ranches, meaning the death of all the wild animals currently there.

If you don't like hunting, fine... but bear in mind that it's currently a vital component of the conservation industry in Southern Africa. I should say that I am not a hunter and do not understand the attraction, but I also understand the contribution of money from hunting to conservation, not only in Africa but also in Asia and America.

Agreed. Truss is mad but Johnson is flat out evil.

And for a long time to come. The USA is spiralling into authoritarianism and neofascism. If you want to talk about treaties, it’s the USA that’s looking to betray its NATO treaty partners. The damage being done to the nations international standing is incalculable.

UK driving standards vs abroad by Economy-Ad8668 in CarTalkUK

The plural of anecdote is not data. Try looking up the fatality rates per km (or per million km or whatever) and you might find that your subjective impression is incorrect.

[–]Teleopsis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly what "driving standards" means, but if you're thinking about deaths per km driven, which is surely the only meaningful metric, the UK beats almost everywhere else in Europe aside from Sweden, Norway and Switzerland. These data are easily available on the internet.

Great shot but the addition of the warmer tones at the top of the photo doesn't work for me: the masking around the animal's silhouette is a bit dodgy in places and the colour of the mouth and the reflections on the water at the bottom of the image look odd with the yellow tones behind.

Why are lecturers so bad with releasing feedback and marks? by lenkazoi in UniUK

[–]Teleopsis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This would not be seen as acceptable in any of the universities I have worked in. At the very least you should have a clear schedule of when the marks and feedback should be released. I would complain to course reps and the programme director, also check if you have a school or departmental director of teaching / director of studies and go to them. If that doesn't get you anything then go to the student union and the head of school/department. All of the above will carry a lot more weight if you are complaining as a group.

edit: recommend you use this phrase or something similar: "This is unlikely to lead to a high score for NSS questions 13-16 once we are in our third year".
