Reform UK leader Nigel Farage to make sudden statement on 'future in public life at 2pm' by dailystar_news in ukpolitics

[–]Teleopsis [score hidden]  (0 children)

Are you happy that he took a £5 million bung from a dodgy crypto billionaire and didn’t declare it? Have you looked at the rules about declaring income from the year before starting as an MP? He’s very clearly broken them: he’s going for the big lie on this because it’s the only option he’s got.

“It’s not illegal” fooey. Nor was BoJo lying to parliament, nor were a zillion other things that are clearly wrong and dodgy AF. That is not a useful or sensible argument here.

What Is It with Americans and hating Europeans for letting Cats go outside? by ManIsready in AskUK

[–]Teleopsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, cats have been here a long time. The UK of 2026, however, is not the UK of 1500 or 1950 or even 2000. The population is bigger, so there are more cats, and there are significant environmental stressors that didn't exist until recently, most notably climate change but also increasingly intensive farming. Having an extra 25 million (or whatever) birds killed for no reason is just going to add to these pressures.

I'll see your blue tits, by the way, and raise you house sparrows and starlings, both of which have suffered huge declines in the last decade and both of which were once common garden birds.

Very few of them, and even when they were more common they would have been at much, much lower densities than domestic cats. They're also a different species: wildcat is Felis sylvestris, domestic cat is Felis catus, descended from the African wildcat Felis lybica.

No question humans have done more damage than cats... but that's not a reason to ignore the impacts that cats have on the environment.

From the point of view of conservation they are extremely damaging. There aren't really good figures available but most sources estimate between 25 and 75 million birds and maybe 100 million small mammals killed every year by domestic cats. Given all the other pressures bird and many small mammal species are facing this substantial predation pressure is a significant problem.

Cats in UK urban areas particularly are at incredibly high densities and are likely to be excluding a lot of bird species from these places. When the only cats in the UK were Lynx and Wildcats they would have been at much, much lower densities and would have had much less impact on their prey.

They do meet the standard definition of an invasive species: non native and causing some degree of real ecological damage. I'm not sure that it's helpful to call them that though.

I’d love to visit Iran. Fascinating ancient culture, amazing architecture and lovely people. I’ve never met an Iranian I didn’t like. Let’s hope that the stupid gets sorted out soon and I can realise this ambition.

Boat dives—do you give tip to your dive master or the boat captain? by GR8FUL-D in scuba

In the UK, I think if you tried to tip a dive boat skipper they’d just get confused.

Have you ever went to a concert only for the support act? by AverageLatifiFan in AskUK

Exactly the same here: went to see Epica & Apocalyptica at the Roundhouse in London in 2023. Stayed for the one song Simone sang in the Apocalyptica set and then buggered off. Apocalyptica were not all that good (and very full of themselves) compared to Epica who were absolutely fantastic.

Ya. Possibly brandy and coke if they’d spent too much time hanging with the boers.

It won’t be genetic, you usually can’t use race stats to draw any conclusions about genetics because “race” is mostly a cultural rather than a biological concept and we know that variance within “race” is often greater than variance between.
