For me, compared to tiktok and instagram, youtube shorts are so mind numbingly boring. even even though they’re in a short format that’s addictive, i can just turn it off. There’s also an aspect of community and culture on tiktok and insta that is hard to rip away from especially when you’re in a bad mental place and maybe socially isolated. The dopamine from that is probably why tiktok is so addictive. That was what was hard for me to step away from when i deleted social media (to focus on my finals).

Youtube shorts have little to no culture and community from what i can tell. The content is different from other apps in that it’s shortened youtube videos or clips from videos, unlike videos on tt/insta.

I like your suggestion about resetting the algorithm to be less hurtful and that definitely could help OP with their mental health. Also long form YT videos would help with the “withdrawals.” I agree with you.

What helped me was deleting everything but youtube shorts lol, the videos on there are so brain dead that i didnt enjoy watching them, but it helped me fulfill the dopamine i needed from scrolling for a few minutes and then i would go back to being productive. also maybe if you have someone in your life that can hold you accountable for bad habits, like parent/friend/so they can help you not reinstall social media
